Deadline done!

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

We made deadline, of course, and now Issue No. 113 is in the hands of our Wisconsin printer.

I’m at home taking a break and supervising my two youngest sons, Robby and Sam, as they build a batten Dutch door for their two-story clubhouse. They’re making it out of fir shelving I salvaged from the old storage room in the building BHM bought three years ago.

This door will go in the first floor of their clubhouse. They already made and installed a batten door on the second floor, shown in the last photo here.

Well, now we’re 48 hours from deadline, so here is a bit more video documenting what we are doing.

72 hours to deadline

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

We’re about 72 hours away from deadline for Issue No. 113, so I thought I’d do a bit more experimenting with video blogging by showing you how we put together an issue. This video is a bit long — about 9 1/2 minutes — but it is condensed (by Jay Stoler) from a 90-minute meeting of editors involved in the final layout.

Keep in mind that all of the articles under discussion have been edited and largely layed out. We know pretty much everything about the articles, art, and ads we are pouring into the issue. But it is still a very mind-consuming job with many details to consider. Hopefully, the video will give you a glimpse into how well we work on deadline.

A video tour of Backwoods Home Magazine

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Here is our first attempt at putting a video clip on this blog. It’s a brief behind-the-scenes tour of the Backwoods Home Magazine office in Gold Beach, Oregon. The video is a bit fuzzy but we’ll improve on the quality as we get more experience.

Working on deadline and a chicken run

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Our sons had a great time camping, and we are making good progress towards Issue No. 113 deadline. Silveira is working on an important article of his own, as well as helping out with others, so we have been doing some brain storming this past week. Lenie is working through the weekend typing the names of new subscribers into the database. Goes to show you that there are no elites at BHM; if work needs to be done, the owners jump right in and help out at any job.

I have found time, however, to work on an expansion of the chicken run attached to our chicken coop. My boys and I cleared out a wood shed attached to the existing coop and run, then joined it to the old run. It seems rather extravagant for chickens, and I wouldn’t have intentionally designed such a structure, but the chickens have benefited by my decision to abandon this particular wood shed. The upper wood shed, closer to the back door of the house, is simply a more convenient point of entry for firewood into the house.

I’ve also been working on some video for the blog. Jay Stoler will show me how to upload it to the blog next week, so pretty soon I’ll give you a “moving” account of my chicken coop run expansion.

Got back from the MREA Fair and went into deadline

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

I’m busier than heck. As soon as we got back from the MREA Fair, there was a ton of work to do. And now we’re right back into our two-week deadline space for next issue. Business is brisk because of a big mailing we sent out, and just because the magazine is getting more popular thanks largely, I think, to the internet.

At any rate, we’re all on deadline here. Lenie and I are working late at the office tonight, after saying bye to our three sons and a friend who set off on a rafting/camping trip a few hours ago.
