The White House is making a big mistake by attacking Fox News . Fox News represents the views of people like me far more often than does CNN. Left-wingers are so used to having the mass media spout their views that they are shocked and alarmed when a large media outlet like Fox News champions the conservative cause on a regular basis. Good for Fox News. They are the best thing to happen to America in decades. They are even better than BHM with our championing of Libertarian views. The White House really hates Glenn Beck, who is positively Libertarian.
America is in a major backlash against Obama’s socialist agenda. He’s taken creeping socialism and turned it into aggressive socialism. That was a mistake for socialist strategy. Too many people have finally taken notice of what is happening in America. Now he attacks Fox News, which is the only powerful TV media standing up against the socialist onslaught. Count me on your side Fox! We Libertarians understand that Fox is an important beacon of hope in a media dominated for too long by ultra left-wing ideology. If Fox News is biased toward the right, so what! CNN has been totally biased toward the left for decades. Now things are more balanced.

Here’s a good article about Libertarians, Free Staters and the Tenth Amendment Movement. We’ve got an article on the Tenth Amendment Movement in the upcoming issue. It has become Part XI of our Coming American Dictatorship series.

There is nothing like a personal example to drive a point home. My grandson, Gavin, has a cold so Annie, my daughter and the ME of BHM, made a doctor’s appointment for him today. Gavin is covered by Tricare, the Medicare-like insurance our Government gives military families. The local doctor has agreed to accept Tricare.
But this morning we got a call from the doctor’s office informing us that Tricare still had not transferred the necessary paperwork so Annie could be seen by a local doctor. Annie has been in Oregon with us since September while her husband is serving in Iraq defending the country. She has been trying to get Tricare bureaucrats to transfer the necessary paperwork for that long. This is how this Medicare-like insurance works — or in this case, does not work. It is a good example of how socialized health care will work once Obama gets it passed into law.
Even when Annie is on station at a military base, she says it would typically take at least four weeks to get an appointment with a military doctor. This is not surprising to any of us vets who have had to deal with military medicine either while we were on active duty or after we were released to civilian life. Shortly after I was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1969, a VA hospital nearly killed me when they botched a simple appendix operation.
This is the face of Universal Health Care, Socialized Medicine, or whatever the Obama Government chooses to call the National Health Care he hopes to put in place for all of us. For all you people who are hoping Obama will deliver on his promise of Universal Health Care, this is how it will work.
I think I’ll just transfer Annie to BHM’s private policy so her baby can see a doctor.

Ron Paul gave this talk a few days ago. I agree with it completely.

I took the following Obama quote off foxnews.com:
“You can’t just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done,” he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.
One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.
If this is the tone Obama intends to use to get Republicans to cooperate with him, he’s going to fail. It sound pretty belligerent to me. I suspect Obama intends merely to shove his new bailout legislation down Republicans’ throats.
This may be good, when you think about it. The faster he tries to take us down the road to socialism, the better the chance that Americans will rebel against it. Both Democrats and Republicans have been very successful for the last several decades using the “slow” approach in remaking America into a Big Government-dominated society. Maybe a guy in a big hurry like Obama is just what we need to promote a reaction from that section of the population that still values freedom.
Notice how concerned Obama is of Limbaugh. I predicted in last issue’s editorial that he would go after talk radio with the Fairness Doctrine. This may be his opening salvo.
The “grace period” I talked about last post may be short-lived if this is an indication of the strong arm tactics Obama intends to use.

I have mixed feelings about Barack Obama’s inauguration.
I don’t like the “progressive” (the liberal’s new name for liberal) takeover of political power in the U.S. It bodes ill for the Constitutional rights I think are important, especially gun rights and the individual’s right to be free of Big Government intrusion into our personal lives.
But I like the polls that indicate that most African-Americans now feel that their struggle for their rights is finally over. I’ve always felt they had all the opportunities of other Americans, but I know many of them did not. If this convinces them that they do, then I think the inauguration is, indeed, a great day for America.
I just hope Obama’s message of change doesn’t mean the end of gun rights, the end of talk radio, and the beginning of a socialist state in America. His deification by the left wing media bothers me greatly. Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and Roosevelt were all deified by their nations’ media just before I came into this world, and a study of history tells me we don’t need another deity at the helm of the last superpower left on earth.
But I’ll give Obama a grace period. I hope he does not trample my rights. I hope he understands that America is the land of the free, not the land of Big Government determining which freedoms should be supported and which should be outlawed.

Here’s a link to a sensible article about global warming. I enjoy reading science, and I’ve read no convincing evidence that man-made global warming is real. Notice I said “man-made.” Global warming may or may not be occurring because global temperatures have been going up and down for hundreds of millions of years due to many reasons, some of which scientists don’t understand. If you watch only CNN, however, you’d think man-caused global warming was a “certain” scientific fact. And if a public figure dares to disagree with the supposed facts of imminent global warming, he or she is castigated by the left media as stupid or irresponsible.

I’ve been accused many times in the past of being the Eternal Optimist, and I don’t deny it. I can see the bright side of any situation, whether it is the election to President of someone whose ideas I disagree with or whether it is the onset of a severe recession, possibly a new Great Depression.
If the election of Barack Obama does nothing but show African-Americans once and for all that in America you can become anything so long as you try hard enough, then I’ll accept his election as a positive thing. It may mean that poor blacks will stop complaining and start working, individually, towards achieving the American dream. That would be good for America.
Also, if African-Americans can realize their dream of seeing a black man elected President, maybe Libertarians like me can realize our dream of seeing a freedom-loving Libertarian become President someday. If Obama’s ascendancy to the Presidency has the long lasting effect of showing that America is indeed a special place where opportunity is there for all its citizens, maybe more and more people will come to realize that it is the maximum freedom we have as citizens that makes this possible.
Also, the onset of this economic Depression will not be stopped. If Obama makes moves similar to what FDR made during the last Great Depression of the 30s, it will worsen this economic downturn. Maybe people will learn from these new mistakes that capitalism and economic freedom are the only ways to gradually get the country back out of a severe economic downturn. In the end, it could mean a political plus for the value of capitalism as a political system.
I hope Obama does not try to turn America into a socialist country or restrict gun rights. And I hope he and the Democrat-controlled Congress do not try to put a free-speech-restricting law like the Fairness Doctrine in place to restrict conservative talk radio. I am optimistic that he will fail in those attempts because too many Americans like me will resist him.
For readers of Backwoods Home Magazine, I think we are prepared for any eventuality. We tend to mind our own business and keep working at our personal lives no matter what. We will whether even a socialist political wave in America, and we will certainly do fine in this looming Depression. We are prepared, and the future is bright for us because we have confidence in ourselves.

This has been very informative reading so far. I’ve also gotten a bunch of email from people who would rather not go on the record in the blog. I’m glad to see so many people putting a lot of thought into their answers without just shooting from the hip about how they would resist to the death.
As I see it, the main problem Americans will face if we get a dictatorial government (which I think will begin in earnest with gun confiscation) is that our own personal resistance may lead to arrest for our friends and relatives. Even if some of us would “resist to the death,” would we resist if it meant prison for our surviving family and friends?
People get kind of sick of the Nazis always being brought up to show how bad things can get, but this is an appropriate discussion to examine what the Nazis did to squelch resistance among the German populace. The Nazis didn’t just arrest the resistor, but they arrested the resistor’s family members all the way out to cousins. They sometimes arrested the resistor’s friends and neighbors. The Nazi’s also liked to arrive in the middle of the night to do their arrests. Such tactics had a chilling effect on the individual German’s willingness to resist. During the Nazi reign, German neighbors often turned in their own “suspicious” neighbors to Nazi authorities in order to protect themselves from guilt by association.
So let me expand on my original question: Even if your are willing to resist, how do you do it if it means endangering your children, your wife, your aunts and uncles, your closest friends? What is the strategy individual people can employ if we are to save freedom for America?

Here’s a hypothetical question:
What will you do, personally, if Government agents come to your door and ask you to give them your guns?
If you don’t want to go public with your answer by commenting on this blog, please send me an email to dave at backwoodshome dot com.
I’m writing a column on this subject for the next issue of Backwoods Home Magazine, and I’d like some input from others. I’ve already asked some neighbors and friends.
If you don’t feel comfortable sending me a comment, please think about what your actions would be. Let’s assume the visit from the Government agents will not be a surprise, as it will have been well advertised in the media, after Congress passes sweeping federal gun control legislation.
A word of caution: Consider your answer without bravado. Remember the story of Bradford Metcalf who went to prison for 40 years for possessing illegal guns and talking about resisting Big Government. It’s serious business when you resist Government and guns are involved, so consider what you would “actually” do, not what you’d like to do.
