Happy New Year!

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Sh- sh- shiver, hot! Sh- sh- shiver, hot!
With an occasional urge to vomit.

If that’s how you feel, then you’ve got what I’ve got. Youngest son, Sam, had it a few days ago. Lasted about five days.

I was going to go fishing for steelhead Friday.

I’ve had my flu shot, so I’ll assume it’s some other purple crud.

Sickness is Nature’s way of letting us know we’ve had it pretty good up to this point.

Happy New Year!

Pistol River talking to the fish

Pistol River at the mouth

Pistol River at the mouth

I live near Pistol River, which is normally pretty quiet. Here it is after two days of big rain. The mouth at the ocean broadened from fifty yards to a quarter mile. This will “wash out” the river and trigger something in the steelhead waiting offshore. When the river begins to drop, the steelhead will start swimming upstream. I’m not sure how many steelhead are in the ocean off of Pistol River, but there are lots in the ocean off the Chetco River 8 miles to the south in Brookings. All the locals are getting ready to do some serious fishing.

A Christmas video from Iraq

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Merry Christmas everyone!

My son-in-law, Erik, sent Annie a video Christmas card from Iraq. He allowed Annie to share it on her blog, and you may want to check it out. It brings home in a very personal way that we have tens of thousands of our best and brightest young people in harm’s way. Like Erik, most of them will not be home for Christmas. Erik must be one powerful singer because his video sure brought tears to my eyes.

An Irish Blessing

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Here’s a fine Irish Blessing that seems appropriate for this time of year. My mother immigrated from Ireland, as did my father’s parents. My mother always told me I was very lucky to have been born an American. It’s best if you click Full Screen, then Start.
