Kitchen

Slowly, over the last year, we’ve been buying one base kitchen cabinet at a time as we could afford it. Then a piece of counter top. And another. Finally, we got them all! And today, while I was working on the computer upstairs, Will tore out the old metal sink base and $3 dishwasher and is getting ready to install the cabinets on the last wall. Wow, it took a long time to buy everything for that short run of cabinets because there were two cabinets, a sink, faucet, and countertop to buy before anything could be put together. And with our no-loan attitude, it took months to get it all. Now our patience is rewarded. Yipeee, I can hardly wait until it’s finished!

After Will got over the worst of his stomach flu, he finished up the body of the bathroom vanity. We have the faucets. (I’ve had them for seven years, just waiting for that vanity.) So there’s another installation project on the to-do-soon list.

Sink-in

Meanwhile, I packed the first of our seed orders for our little homestead seed business and am working on an article for the magazine.

And I FINALLY got the snow off the goat barn path with the snow blower. It was packed hard from walking on and boy was it tough to remove! I had to chop the snowplow berm up with the shovel before it could be blown away. But, hey, it’s gone now and it’s so much easier to haul feed and water to the goats rather than climb over that three foot frozen hump of snow four times a day. It doesn’t take much to make a homesteader happy, does it? A warm fire, good health, plenty of food for us and the critters, shelter, and easier chores. And spring right down the road!

The wolves are breeding and that usually doesn’t happen until a month from now. Hopefully they know that we’ll be having an early spring? (How do I know? They “mark” the snow banks all down our driveway when they’re romantic. No wolf pee all winter, then every few feet there’s a signpost, well tracked with wolf tracks and scratches. We can wish, can’t we? — Jackie

  1. Zelda,

Gee, do I tell him? Maybe he’ll run away from home. But I get to keep Mittens, Spencer and Hondo!!! Do remember that all that stuff took lots of time to get together before the assembly started.

  2. Access to the seeds is wonderful and appreciated, but having spent most of a month rehabbing and repairing and upgrading a pile of little things around my house and on my vehicle (with more to do), I’m looking forward to the green box at the top of the page that says the clones of Will are ready and for sale. My check is all filled out except for the amount.

  3. The kitchen is great! Love the bathroom vanity – especially the fact that it sits off the floor on legs! You can slip small things underneath for extra storage. Our dog baby is shedding like crazy and we have had some 70 degree days in Dallas, Texas! Love what you said about the wolves feeling romantic! Sounds like some pups are on the way!

  4. I am so happy for you! I have followed your story of this home from your books and BWH through the years, and I am almost as excited for you as you are! It has also been fun to see David grow from that cute little one to the sturdy young man he is now.
    Do you hire out Will?

  5. M Blaney,

About the whole of our mini-seed business is located in the green box at the top of the blog. We’re selling only varieties that we, ourselves, grow and love. As we saved hand-harvested tomato seeds, we don’t have tons to offer this year. But as the response has been so awesome, we’ll plant many more tomatoes this year to harvest for seed. All of the seed is non-GMO and organically raised (not certified; can’t afford the expense!) And all are open pollinated to encourage folks to raise and save their own seed.

  6. LindaDeGroot,

I’ve been the whole way throughout the years, from a wash basin to wash dishes in and NO kitchen, let alone kitchen cabinets to today with a nice kitchen, AND new cabinets and a sink! Same with the bathroom; outhouse and wash stand with a bathtub in the corner of the small bedroom to today with a nice sized bathroom complete with tub, shower and now, soon, a bathroom vanity and sink! I’m so excited and thankful.

  7. I have never wanted for a nice kitchen, but I can imagine how you must feel, getting it all in after collecting it over time. However, I do envy that bathroom vanity, but right now, that vanity would take all my floor space! I barely have room for a tiny sink hanging on the wall. It has been that way for 47 years, not a good thing.

  8. Vanity is awesome. Will did a great job on it. How nice to finally have cupboards in the kitchen. Worth the wait. They’re beautiful. Hoping for a good spring here in SW Colorado too. Last 3 years orchard froze just as it budded out. Last year’s harvest was 5 peaches! Early things here too. Usually don’t see a Redwing Blackbird until about May. Have a flock of about 200 eating up all the seed I put out for the Juncos. Very strange. Haven’t seen the normal elk and deer in the pastures either so far. Usually have a huge herd of elk and deer after the first heavy snow in the mountains.

  9. So many nice changes all at once…enjoy!

Here in Virginia our robins came back in late December.

My parents renovated a home in Maine while we lived in it. It’s funny to see the Christmas pictures with yellow insulation over here and pink over there.

  10. Six years ago my husband and two sons said they were going to give me a new kitchen for Christmas. That day they moved the stove, sink and fridge out of the kitchen and installed them in the corner of the dining room. They tore up the floor, which was rotting any way. There they set for four years. I finally got a new floor and the stove and fridge moved two years ago as our daughter was getting married and we were going to have a ton of people here. I know how you feel about the new cupboards and counter top. One counter top set in the barn for about a year until we were going to have 33 people for Thanksgiving 2013. Then he installed it. I love it!!

  11. That vanity is just beautiful. And your kitchen looks so cozy, even if it is torn up for remodeling. How exciting to be getting these new things for your home!

  12. I have seen a group of 8 to 10 robins feeding on old fruit in a tree about 10 miles south of Romeo,Michigan for the past week. I sure hope the wolves and the robins are right. The robins are about 6 weeks early for this area. The cabinets look great. Brian

  13. Your vanity is beautiful!! I also like your kitchen cupboards. How wonderful! I am crossing all of my fingers and toes that the wolves are right about an early spring! Better get more seeds ordered!!!

  14. I hope you are right about the Spring, The vanity is beautiful cant wait to see it installed. Glad you are getting your kitchen done. That will be a big help. Glad you both are feeling better. Take care.
