Howdy... the wife and i are planning a trip to Ft Lauderdale/ West Palm beach Florida in early Jan and i was wondering if anyone could reccommend a nice hotel or a nice area...
here's the specifics...
i would like something i can take a shuttle from the airport to the hotel but i want the hotel to be on the beach, and i would like everything like restaurants and night life to be within walking distance, ( i dont want to rent a car)
Something under 200 a night would be nice.
i like to metal detect and have never done it on the beach. any detectorists out here with some hints ? thanks in advance.... and if you would like you can email me direct Thisisdoc@aol.com
Doc, I don't have any info for you but if nobody else comes up with anything, message me and I'll ask my son and daughter in law....her dad lives in central Florida and I used to live in central Florida but so much has changed in the last 30 years.....
Now you have ALL of us wanting to go with you! ha :)

I would go for either the Sheraton Yankee Clipper Beach Resort or the Marriott's BeachPlace Towers. I don't know what rate they would be charging at that time, but you can't go wrong with the location of either...

The Yankee Clipper is nice from what I remember and right on the beach (south end).

I have lived in Florida for the last 40 years. If you go anywhere South of Orlando, go heavily armed and don't go out after sundown. I would recommend the Panhandle. The once-white beaches are now dead and covered with sewage, but it's safer than down South. Take lots of insecticide and room freshener with you. My wife and I prefer to use our sleeping bags when staying at local hotels.

I've lived in Florida nearly as long and while its far from what it used to be, that last comment is a bit over the top. You'll be fine at either of the places I suggested earlier.
I will say that- just like any large city- you should never wander around in unfamiliar areas after dark.
