I HATE those things! Hubby smashed one today and it was a good 5 inches long. Summer in Finland..best time of year my butt lol.

I've been bitten alot but the worst was on my feet 4x. I have NO clue why there but the little b@stards got me good.

Guess who forgot to pack her Calamine lotion overseas ::)?

I found that using Gold Bond Body Lotionn really helped me not itch. The menthol in it did a fantastic job. I'm sure other skin products with menthol would do great at stopping the itches.

How do you deal w/ mosquito bites?

You will think I'm crazy and my Mom and my LPN wife have both advised against it but, I've been using this method for over 20 years and it hasn't failed me.
I use a toothbrush with stainless steel, brass, whatever bristles to scratch it until it stops itching. Then I pour 70% rubbing alcohol on it and rub that in. It burns like crazy for 30 seconds but I'm not taking my boots off every 30 minutes to scratch. Works on chiggars, too! :D

And Yes. I'm serious.

Ozark, you gotta toothbrush with stainless steel bristles ? How do skeeters get in your boots ?

Best thing I know is to not get bit in the first place, just a little bit of avon skin so soft (seriously), no deet, doesn't smell bad, and it works. You can even dilute it with up to 50% water to make it go further. You can use it on animals, (no deet) no terrible chemicals, and it's not greasy. Most of the fishermen I know use it for the salt water skeeters, they are the worst ones.

PREVENTION!
BEN'S 30. Its 30% DEET. Works good, smells good, even tasts good. Except to ticks, mosquitoes, flies, no see ums chiggers, and fleas, thay dont like it AT ALL.
When you get bit you dont want to further damage the skin, Pain relief cream/ gell is the thing to use, some natural slavs
are available. DMSO works, As will rubbing alcohol,The very best thing for this and any type of inflamation Is livinity releif cream, it was desined to stop inflamation. And it do.

yeah, but I am allergic to Avon. someone said use Listerine,I put it on the rim of my clothing when I went blackberry picking, maybe there were no skeeters there. Put it on the window frames and doors to keep them from going in the house. Now, that that is solved, what to do about flies.

Oh yeah, to answer the question, The best thing I've found is to not scratch the darn thing. It's hard not to, but when you scratch it, it spreads the poision around and just itches more. If you can just leave it alone for just a minute it will quit itchin'
Worst thing you can do for a fire ant bite is scratch it. I've seen people with some terrible infections from those things. I just leave it alone and it makes a little blister, and in a couple of days your system absorbs it, and the blister dries up and goes away.

Is their something I should know about deet. I use skin so soft and I also use off with 98.11 deet. They both work great. I carry off in my backpack as well as my fishing vest. Skin so soft around the house.

It's just not good for you Mac, but it's better than gettin' aids or whatever from the bugs. If I have a choice, I'll use anything but harsh chemicals. And I know someone is gonna jump me sayin that skeeters cant give you aids. So before you do, think about this, if he (skeeter) got it from joe blow, but doesn't give it too me, then the skeeter has the cure in his body, right. NOT ! I know, the gummint says they don't transmit it too, and whatever else do they tell you that is a lie ? Duh.

Hold that thought, LOL. I like it, sounds good to me. They say thet can't but you really gotta wonder. I know I don't want to be the first to prove them wrong. Hear in AZ. they transmit West Nile. Not a good thing for sure.

Nope, me neither Mac. I first read about that years ago on an awesome lady Dr.s site. Now if anyone wants to seriously argue the point, I'm sure it's still there. She has some really good info on the cancer subject too. Darned good site, it's
"dr day.com" She sure woke me up on the skeeter thing, and several others as well. You remember that guy with the billy goat beard that was the national head guru Dr. ? I forgot his title, but he also said the same thing 'bout skeeters. When you think about it, it ain't so hard to figger out is it ? If the skeeter's got the cure, why don't they just milk 'em and put it in a bottle. Right ? :D

You can get west nile from skiter bites, And you can also git ANY OTHER blood disease, Or diesease of the blood, I knew a fella who got westnile from sketers in KANSAS. It messed his mind up. I know their are natural bug repeliants, that dont hurt you, i saw some in some hippie magazine, but cant find them.

West nile, sure, and what ever else they suck blood out of, they land on you, stick their whatever in you, and you smack him and squirt that bad blood right into your arm. You just gave yourself a dose of whatever. Haven't swatted a skeeter since I read that. If he sticks you, leave him alone for a second, and he will suck that stuff rite back out, then gently bump him off. I won't smack one and smear that all over. Crazy but it makes sense. :D :o

Any sketer that bites aint a he, its a she, only femails bite, Makes you think twice about 'hitting' one. The way i think about it is, if a person with AIDS gets stuck with a needle, then you get stuck with that needle, you are contaminated with whatever is on that needle, Same way with a sketer sticker, or a tick or whatever. I rember a plant that could be rubbed all over and it would drive the skeeters away. What was it?

They can not carry HIV. Tests was done on parisights before *they told the world about the viruse. *I have worked for the man who did the tests. *If they could carry it...A fact that I feel shows a higher creator.

Yea the baby soft stuff works..Our church sent a ton over to to a mission in the jungle. It also kills any critter that gets on you.

Well, opinions are like rear orfices, everyone has at least one. As to the skeeter one, I'll still go with the ex-surgeon general, and Dr. Day.com, in which several Dr's will clearly show the structure of a blood cell in a video, in which the aids virus penitrates the cellular walls of the blood cell, and resides inside of it, which is what makes it so difficult to filter it or treat. Anyone who is willing to take the word of our gooberment has my blessing. I will continue to be aware of the danger, and do anything I can to to reduce the possibility of contracting the virus. I will also continue to warn and educate any and all people that I love and care about in the matter, which is presicely what is happening now. Simple arithmatic to me, as I stated, if the skeeter doesn't pass it on to the next victom, then his(her) body has the ability to filter or seperate the virus from the blood cells, or, to put it simply, the skeeter has the cure for the virus. How much grey matter does it take to understand that, regardless of who differs with it? Is it wiser to do what you can to avoid it in the first place, or to stick your head in the sand and contract the terrible disease, and say, "but someone said this wouldn't happen". Can that someone give you your life back ? Does he have the cure if he is wrong ? Of this I am sure, there are many people out there dying who would certainly like his name and address if you would care to divulge it.

I have done my duty on the matter. Case closed for me. I do have one question though, why did your church spend the money to send the repellent if it is not needed, and what of malaria, and so many others ?

I know the man who did the study..know him well. But I sure don't want to go threw life worry'n about the anvil over my head that is not real.

It's a blend of lemongrass, eucalyptus and citronella oils (watered down to make it go farther) that is supposed to work wonders against mosquitoes. And these folks are in malaria territory, so they know firsthand what works.

i second the alcohol - wintergreen preferred - scrub with coarse pot-scrubber instead of wire-brush (unless you're doing penance for something bad)

My sister swears that she keeps them off by using long sleeve shirt & pants dried with a strong drier sheet. She also tucks those sheets in her cuffs, waste band and socks.

Personally, I use the commercial bug repellant with deet. I know it's not supposed to be good for you, but it has to be better than the diseases you can get from skeeters.

So . . . How do I deal with the bites? I do my darndest not to get bit in the first place! Boy, I hate those bloodsuckers! If I could afford it, I'd buy one of those mosquito-attracting killer machines or a combination of them - and take back my deck!

I use Sea Breeze, it's an astringent, and it really works. I use it on the grandchildren and one application seems to do the trick. It may sting a little bit, but that goes away quickly.

Lighter fluid, razor, an ice pick and matches. First you shave half of the affected area and then pour a liberal amount of lighter fluid on the half with the hair, start it on fire and stab the buggers with the ice pick as they run from the fire… No wait that’s for crabs, sorry!
