I was wondering if anyone here has any thoughts on needing medical treatment and being way out in the toolies. We found out recently that my husband to be has some early signs of glaucoma and he will lose his sight. He is presently in Iraq and we hope that we can stash enough cash to get a place farther out in the country and get set up before his sight is gone. I guess I never really gave it much thought before but we are getting old, well he is anyway. ;D Do any of you live with or know of people who live with any type of medical issues off the grid? What would be your suggestions the best ways to handle things. Thanks in advance for your input.
Tell him to take all the vitamins and herbal supplements he can for his eyes! I have Retinal Vein Occlussion and I take Lutein, Vitamin A, and Bilberry along with Plavix for my particular treatment. But the Lutein, Vitamin A and Bilberry and recommended for anyone with ANY kinds of eye problems.
So far I've only lost the upper part of my left eye so am hoping that I never completely loose my vision!
Our lives have been super complicated this year because of my husban'd two heart attacks....he didn't help me hardly at all around the homestead anyway because he HATES to farm but it really makes me think about medical care.
Make sure that whereever you are that you have a fully stocked medical/first aid kit....not one of those little bitty things you buy at the store but one with much more stuff in it....Jackie Clay has done some really good articles about that. You might find them on this web site.
Make sure you have some sort of good communication, whether a cell phone, ham radio, etc. so you can call if you need help....
best wishes!!!!!

Of course, hubby should be using the glaucoma eye drops to save his sight.
We are also older and we opted to live closer in. At a minimum, we are members of LifeFlight - an air taxi service.

My Dad has glaucoma, has been using the eye drops for years, still has as much of his sight as he did when he started treatment for it.
I don't have it yet,but get tested for it yearly.

In my 20 year struggle with heart failure, persistent A-Fib, Insulin Resistance, and an over-reactive immune system, I have found the Best two medications are a low glycemic index, low glycemic load diet; and demanding physical exercise. I used to take about nine heart medications and now I am down to just small doses of two, one to treat my heart failure and Afib (.125mg Digoxin) and one to protect me against clots (2.5mg Coumadin). My chronically high blood pressure problems and my cholesterol and triglycerides and blood sugar are at very healthy levels, solely through diet and exercise, without medication. If it works here in the city, it sure should work in rural areas.
