For Y2K I used new enamel lined paint cans to store beans in. I have about sixty pounds of beans right now in one pound packages. I would like to use the new paint cans again, but should I open the packages of beans and dump them out in bulk or keep them in their packages.

where do you get paint cans?

My self I'd keep them in the packages, just in case of contamination from the enamel. It seem that over time some of the chemicals in the enamel will leech into the bean's. I'm not real sure if I'd even store beans in enameled cans, that's maybe just me though. I'd use plain glass jars with screw on lids, just because I can find them anyplace and metal tends to leave a taste on food after long storage. Glass is safe as long as it's stored securely, breakage is the first most risk with it.

I would think it best to only open the cans as you consume the product in them. They should keep better than repackaging into bulk contailers.

Hummmmm.... I did not know you could get those.
I may check that out. Thanks

Slightly off topic...

These unused paint cans make good emergency stoves, just poke holes in the lid, add a roll of toilet paper and some isopropyl alcohol for the fuel.
