know your pain...what did the chickeen carcas look like? head on?

key to farming is never giving up. After you've been up all night to tend a calf only to see it die any how...or you've dropped to your knees and pray'd for God to send rain when every other person wants a sunny weekend for a picnic.

That's just farming

k. weezles take off heads.

Farming has given me a perspective we've lost as a world. *I'm guessing you could not raise a cow or pig to eat..and do the whole thing your self? *But farmers also live by the code, animals first...people second. *That means 366 days a year.

That means 360 days a year.

What? 5 days off for good behavior? LOL

Sandycane,
That's just part of farming, we have all experienced loss. Where would our country be if all the farmer's gave up after a few bad experiences?

I guess I've just lived on a farm for too long, you just take it in stride, kick yourself in the butt and keep going. ;D

It is tough. And if its not for you that's ok. Just remember the way things are heading the professionals moght not be there putting your food in the stores or farmers market. The little that is, depending on what you do, you may not be able to afford it anyway.

Dont give up. Take it in small chunks and do what you can and expand when you feel comfortable.

Your crops can be protected without killing anything. Put up fencing when they are young and certain hedge crops deter certain animals. Not everything works but alot does. Keep the cats they get rid of the rodents. Fence in the chicken enclosure if you are keeping the cat. Its all about trade offs, and compromise, and perserverence.

Most of all, build a community. Get to know your neighbors, the ones that are worth it anyway. You may not need to do everything yourself. if you have people you can rely on to do what you can't and trade with them when the time comes. Maybe your neighbor will come get your rabbits from your garden and can them for you if you buy the jars and let them keep some meat.

You and your family will appreciate it when you are doing it yourself, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing if the world really does go to pot, you wont have to know it.

If you choose not to. Thats ok too.

I come from a family of farmers and ranchers. My Grandfather told me along time ago that there are four things to remember when working the land. Patience, perseverance, planning and that you are always at the mercy of mother nature, so try not to make her mad.. It is hard and a lot of work raising your own food and as stated above maybe you should start small.

If you really don't feel up to it don't worry about it as I said my family are all farmers and ranchers and we appreciate all the business we can get.. ;D ;D ;D

Sandycane, I am growing my first (very small) vegtable garden this year and I am doing everything wrong. However, I would rather learn while I can still go to the grocery store than learn while I'm hungry. Hang in there.

gsb, good to hear your garden is doing well. I learned a lot this year while killing my plants so I'm sure I'll have better luck next year.

yea, if you can't stand stuff die'n even to feed your self.. you may not want to be a big farmer...some times ya just can't help what happens around a farm.

have you tried spray'n your plants with Vinager and dial soap?

never use the sevin stuff.

if you see one bunny, you got 20 or more.. just saying that in farming, sometimes you kill stuff by misstake..bunny vs hay'n equipment..
