Jan 8.08 my computer got fried by a lighting hit so I lost
EVERYTHING in the way of data. It even fried my back up
hard drive that was seperate. My computer was actually
in flames from the hit. (than God for my fire extinguisher)

Now that my insurance has paid off and I have new equipment
I'm trying to re-construct my fav book marks. I've got them
all...except one.....the one for the sister forum that has many
of BWH members there also.

HELP!! SOMEBODY, PLEASE!!!!

BTW, I use a site called http://del.icio.us for my bookmarks. This way, they are all kept in a common location which enables me to modify them from anywhere. There are also some tools that can be installed in your browser for quick add and view. Here is a link to my personal bookmarks. http://del.icio.us/madtripper

Buck,

I hate that when it happens.

Lost all my bookmarks --it has been miserable rebuilding all my links.

Precious info--addys of all my forum friends.

I have notebooks full now---I kinda trust writing them down
now---

Mad--thanks for that link.

Buck--Good luck!! ;D

You can back-up your list of bookmarks. This may not be the optimal method, but it works:

Open "My Computer"
Choose "C" dive
Open "Documents and Settings"
Open "Owner"
Open "Favorites"
Using the resizing double arrow in the lower right corner, adjust the window of "My Computer" to a narrow height, leaving the width alone and then move the adjusted window to the top of the frame

Minimize the adjusted "My Computer" window

Have a disk or CD in and ready to record on to

Open another "My Computer"
Open the drive for the recording media you're using
Now adjust this "My Computer" window to a narrow window as you did above, but move this one to the bottom of the frame.

Maximize the first "My Computer Frame" and you should now have both "My Computer" frames on the screen at the same time

Using the "Edit" tab from the top frame with "Favorites" and click "Select All" from the edit menu

Now place the curser anyplace in the "Favorites" press and hold the Left mouse button and drag the "Favorites" down to the other open frame below.

Once you there simply release your finger and the Favorites list will be copied into the recording media. Save as required by which media you are using.

Now if you blow, loose or change computers, all you have to do is reverse the process, doing the double "My Computer" open windows and drag the list up to the "Favorites" folder...

Your back-up data is still available and your Favorites is now reconstituted.

Took a lot more to time to type the instructions than it actually does to save the list....

Thanks folk's!! ;D ;D

Mad, "The Gulch" was the one I was missing.

kawalekm, I'll visit this site! Thanks!!

tufhelp, I run Mac's so your help was welcome but not
useful for a Mac. It's a LOT simpler on a Mac anyway. ;D

A simpler way when using IE for backing up your favorites:

Open browser
Choose File, import/export
Hit "next" if prompted
Choose Export Favorites
Go through the motions to save on a USB stick, floppy or whereever your heart disires.

Firefox is similar however you need to access the bookmark manager and then go through the motions.

I just had to laugh because although it is "simpler" on a Mac, it still isn't done on a regular basis.

If you haven't checked out http://de.licio.us yet, it is a very handy tool. I haven't been able to organize mine yet however I'm in the process of using a standard tagging scheme.

Tripper, I gave that favorites saving method a try and it is shorter but at first blush it dosen't save all the favorites in my list. It only seemed to bring up those favorites that were in a file and did not bring up the "individual" favorites I have saved that I havent consolidated into their own seperat file. So all of the random URL I went to and just hit "Add" without assigning a file were not saved using that method. Am I doing something worng?

Thanks, Tufhelp

Make sure you are highlighting the main folder "favorites". If you navigate to one of the subfolders, it will only grab the contents of that folder.

If you open the file, it will display all of your favorites as hyperlinks. Its best for importing into firefox or to del.icio.us or whatever other browser you are using.

I did it yesterday and made sure I was still on track today and all exported fine including the custom folders I had created.

If you are a Firefox/Mozilla user, you can try the plugin called Foxmarks to manage your bookmarks.

Although Foxmarks is also an online server, like del.icio.us, it also synchronizes from your regular old bookmarks, which I like. Then, after you put Foxmarks on your main computer, you can add other computers to your Foxmarks, as well, from work, from your laptop, etc. Since I use at least three different computers in home and work, this is a nice option for me.

There's also some thingie that will move your stuff from del.icio.us to Foxmarks, but I haven't made it work yet. It's likely to be just a brain fart on my end.
