Well, I have a small problem of what to appropriately spend my tax rebate on. I figure the best investment would be to get some of the "wants" checked off my SHTF list. One of those was to have at least some minimum alternative power generation capabilities. I am a tinker-er by nature, but electricity has always been on my scary list. I think its time to get over it, and start a little solar project. I live in a medium city, but my little garage is without any power. I was considering something like this, *Sunforce 60W Solar Charging Kit: http://www.sunforceproducts.com/english/details.asp?id=29 . This is small enough that I can play with it and learn as I go. I could maybe run some lights for the house/yard.. and I believe without too much cost I can expand it to be able to at least run a saw or some other tool in the garage. I am not looking to power the whole house yet, or go off grid, but perhaps this is a fair way to get my feet wet and build up to a larger system down the road.
