From the previews, it looks like he has some good, practical ideas, but I'd be more inclined to purchase if I heard good things from someone who's seen them.

John formed the Yahoo SolarHeat discussion group, and still participates on a regular basis.
There are also lots of people there who built per John's books and will be happy to tell you how it worked out (mostly very well).
