Hello, all.

I just found out this morning that late last month, one of our moderators, DV8, was seriously injured when his motorcycle was hit by a car.

My understanding is that he faces multiple surgeries and probably months of rehab.

Should anyone want to send him a get well card or note, BHM will be happy to forward them on to him.

Please send any such items to:

DV8
c/o Backwoods Home Magazine
P.O. Box 712
Gold Beach, OR 97444

If and when I learn more, I'll post it here.

Thanks.

Very good idea---some-body step up and be in charge---

I am sure he could use a little help with that.

Somebody ask admin.

Great idea DK,

I'm on a fixed income but if someone passes the hat, I'll give what I can. I know what it's like to be broke( 64 years experience) and let's don't talk about medical bills.
Will be looking for updates.

yeah he may be screwed if he only has the government legal system to rely on for a liability case.

Since the original, mid-July contact, we've not heard from DV8.

The office staff did send a card signed by everyone, but to my knowledge, no cards have were received from others to be forwarded.

I can say that BHM would not want to take responsibility for any donations. However, anyone so inclined could certainly include whatever they care to in a card, as the cards will not be opened prior to forwarding.

Cards should be addressed as indicated in the first post of this thread.

Thanks.

thanx to the BHM staff for the card & to all for the well wishes. I finally got the strength to go online, tho now just at 56k. I type with one hand, as the other is useless at this time.

The upside is my bones seem to be healing nicely, & they have used titanium plates to reconstruct my cheekbone, Jaw & nose, as well as placed rods in my left arm. knee replacement didn't fare so well, so they say, & other surgery's will be needed. My foot is simply in a cast & doesnt need surgery to heal it.

The down side is that I think I now have a pain med dependancy, perticularly morphine, which will need to be addressed before I consider myself "healed". I do still take it, but am trying to wean myself off to the chargain of my doctors, who say having the pain will conflict with the rehabilitation proscess, where we get to learn to use our knee & arm again.

somehow they feel we should deal with the imminent addiction at a later time & deal with the broken & painful body now. I do however, feel sick & terrible without the morphine (kadian's) and with them, I become a veritable vegitable. it seems to be a no win situation.

I applied for temp. tenncare (insurance) but was refused. seems you have to have kids to be a male & qualify in tennessee. also, the lady who hit me had no insurance, no liscence, so apart from suing her (she is dirt poor & currently in jail) this whole bill will be out of pocket.

I'm told the motorcycle is mangled, tho I havent seen it, I can only assume from the looks of my face, & Body, that it is.

this is about all I can do for now. even this little bit of typing & thinking has been hard. the pain seems to throb as if to say, gimme morphine or else. when I refuse to take it my throat constricts till it's hard to breath, & it feels as if invisible hands are choking me. this goes on for an hour or two, untill I break down & take it, then within 5 mins I feel no pain, breath freely, & go in & out of reality.

I do thank God for the neighbors who have been more kind than family, in doing my chores & checking on me. I have a nurse who comes 3 X a week, but without the help from the neighbors, I feel as tho I'd have just given up. The pastor even brings the sermon to me on sundays, after giving it to the congregation, & has been a Godsend to me.

I will try to return from time to time, when I'm not morphined up, to give a status report, but can't make any promises of when or how often. it's getting hard to breath, so it's la la land time..

Dave,
I can only imagine what you are going through. God bless you , you will be in my prayers. I'm a rider also. By the Grace of God there go I. The idiots in their cages, surrounded by 2 tons of steel, unaware of anything around them are everywhere.

I admire your resolve to stay off the morphine. You may want to reconsider though if the pain delays your recovery. Once you get your strength back you can be weaned off the morphine.

My wife had a horrible accident 10 yrs ago. She still has good days and bad days. Oxycontiin has been a God send for her. It's the only thing that allows her to live anything approaching a normal life.

Just take it one day at a time and get better.-Jack

Dave,

Although I don't know you personally, I have heard and have followed your story. I am glad to see that you are healing and pray that God continues to heal you and that the hospital bills and insurance mess all works out.

WELCOME BACK!

Dave, I am glad to hear that you are doing a little better. You have obviously gone over the hump, and it will get easier from now on. Much, much easier! In time, anyways.

I am a little concerned that you are short of breath when you skip your pain pills: it sounds like you need to taper down the pills instead of just stopping. As in, next time don't skip a pill, cut it in half instead. That way you can taper yourself off without yanking your body around.

The human body really RESENTS sudden changes: it is better to taper off.

My own body is rather dinged up, and I realize that everybody has their own coping strategy. What works for me is to not think too far ahead when I get depressed: it is enough to think about the next couple of weeks. Full function is not something that I am thinking about right now: getting that wild grapevine cut down is. And, the wild vine will of course sprout again, which will give me tender young shoots that perhaps I can graft onto using the neighbors concord vine........

Everybody needs goals. The benefit of this goal (which will result in a second-rate quality of vine) is that I can do it a bit at a time. Planting a grape vine is one big job:pruning and grafting one is a much lighter job and even THAT is broken into 2 jobs!

I am NOT! going to be able to plant a vine (that takes digging) and care for it in this heat: it is not going to happen. But I CAN cut off the rest of that wild vine and I will probably do it tomorrow. By the time the summer heat starts to break I should have a shoot on that wild vine that I can graft onto. Grafting will be a TOTALLY different goal.

One goal at a time.

Again, I am glad to hear from you. Get enough rest, and stop in again when you get cabin fever.

Good to see you back! We have been keeping you in our prayers and will continue to do so.

I second Terri on weaning the morphine. Be very careful with this. You can have seizures from withdrawal. Ugly! This happened w/ DS after his first open heart.

Maybe you could ask the Docs to switch you to a wean schedule of Methadone and Ativan. The Methadone will fuel you body's need for the morphine and the Ativan will relax you through a less intense withdrawal process.

We did this for DS, and it is standard from any of the kids who have been in the hospital on pain meds for a long time. You have your meds prescribed to 4x per day. Then switch off Methadone @12, Ativan @3, Methadone @ 6, Ativan @9, etc. Eventually, you will be able to reduce the dosage of each, then space out the dosages, until you are off. That would also allow you to increase dosages during Physical Therapy w/out knocking you on your A$$ ;)

Good luck to you and be careful!

Steph

DV8,
Kadian is a 24 hour time release morphine. It cannot and should not be halved. This would give you an immediate release of morphine that is intended for 24 hours of release. Can you say DEADLY OVERDOSE? You are not getting addicted. Addiction is something that happens when the drug is not needed. In your case, it is obviously needed to control your pain. ( You aren't using it for sh-ts and giggles.) Please continue to use the Kadian as prescribed or, if you feel that it knocks you out, ask for a lower dose of Kadian or an equivalent or lower dose of the 12 hour release MSER. ( Which also should never be halved for the same reason sited above.) Please allow your pain to be controlled so you may make it through rehab. I agree with the docs. FYI, I am a nurse that doesn't mind disagreeing with doctors.

kadian - could the weird symptoms be coming more from halving the pills and swallowing them that way instead of whole? maybe causing what you said, overdosing to some degree because of the time release safety factor?

what is it that holds the tiny little time pills inside the big pill and keeps them from dissolving in the esophagus - is it the colored coating on the outside of the big pill?
