Hi guys,
I don't mean to be critical. I am really wondering. Other forums seem to have a great deal to say. I joined this forum recently because it looked interesting but no one seems to have anything to say.
This Mattel thing has many forums in an uproar about it yet no one has even mentioned it here. Maybe I have just missed it. This is an example only.

Hmmm?
Exodus, maybe you've missed our discussions on China and other Current Events. Here, of course, they are simply sidebars; something to be expected and something that one laments about. The Wheat gluten, the antifreeze in medicines, toothpastes, etc., the poisonous fish in poisonous waters, and most recently the Mattel debacle - all imported from China with casual indifference to health and well-being of Americans and other countries' populations as well. All of this is a natural outcome of the NAFTA and CAFTA and other deals that our politicians have made to destroy America while lining their own pockets... and something we can all now only shrug and say, "Told Ja so."
Being up in arms about something we knew would happen just seems kinda non-productive. I am a professional ceramicist; I know about lead paints in intimate and excruciating detail, as well as how lead is inherent in many clays. China does not use lead-free paints, and any ceramics that you buy are likely poisonous (even though I am strict about content, as many American ceramicists are). But people will sneer at my handmade items at the flea market and tell me, "I can buy that at WalMart for less!" - yes, you can - and get the mass-produced, fired-in poisons that you will eat and drink daily. Shrug. What's the point of trying to illuminate or educate people whose sole concern is price point? Wouldn't that disrupt Darwinian progression? Don't they deserve what they get for demanding cheap and easily accessible goods 24 hours a day, seven days a week?
I'd rather discuss cows and chickens and other progressive, self-improving, protective and personally uplifting goals, than complain about things that no amount of revolt or complaint will stop. There's too much money to be made on the backs of our dead and poisoned children and animals for the politicians and the mass marketers to stop now.

Thank you Wiley for enlightening me. I, obviously, have not checked into this more thoroughly and therefore conclude that my thread was premature. You have silenced me.

Oh, no dear, I did NOT mean to silence you!!!! PLEASE do not stop discussing or debating here...
I was not dissing you, simply pointing out the difference here than on other blogs. I too participate in other blogs, but they in the main are covered up by people without whole-earth concepts of history, socio-political impacts, philosophy, the humanities, and/or survival. Like the Y2K blogs, they merely REact with fear and anger, then let it wash away when the "crisis" disappears from their immediacy. They gather cans of gasoline and boxes of perishable foods into their city apartments for the current disaster or crisis, without having a steady appreciation and maturing knowledge of preparation for any and every 'crisis' - be it natural or man-made. Then when the 'crisis' goes away, so does their concentration - until the next, and the next.
This blog/forum is much more peaceful, more instructional, more concerned with general impacts and long-lasting responses than repetitive immediate crises - and is a much nicer place to hang out...

exodus,
perhaps, if there is a lull, it is due to the time of year, mid summer, dog days etc. etc.
It is by no means dead on this forum. I know what you are talking about. Sometimes, you run into periods when it seems nothing is going on but this is deceiving.
I can assure you, discussions can get pretty lively around here at times; lol.
Hang in there and be a regular. You'll find it won't take long to get to know everyone. I won't guarantee that you'll agree with everything said but we will defend to the death, your right to disagree.
Catch you later,

It has been a bit quiet around here lately (and that may not be such a bad thing)
Could be time of year, workloads, tired of the fight, whatever ... there is an ebb and a flow to all boards and I figure this one will get going again.
Durn sure not due to people no longer wanting to get away from it all ... maybe they just wanted to get away from "this" all for a bit

It has just been so hot and dry here in central north Alabama that I spend my days seeing after all my critters....trying to keep cool water for all the ducks, chickens, goats, and bunnies (not to mention the cats and dogs) has almost been a full time job during the past few weeks.
I am SOOOOOOOOOOO ready for some cooler weather! It has broken all records here for days in a row over 100 and things like that. So far I've lost two chickens and haven't lost any bunnies but I don't know how much longer they can hang on even with the fans and the icey bottles they get every day!
Yes, it is a busy time of year. I have not checked the forums for over a week simply because I haven't had the time.
Exodus- This Mattel thing has many forums in an uproar
Wax- Yet Wiley makes a good point in that "uproars" are not usually worth attending to.
So what is your complaint concerning American companies who utilize cheap labor to produce American products, then complain when those products are inferior?

Since I replied to this question earlier I've thought about it along.
Have been times when there was a LOT more activity here than at the present.
I can't answer for anyone else but on occasion it has gotten pretty bad in here (but there has been a lot more good times to offset the bad I think)
That has probably sent a lot of folks to other places to spend their on-line time.
I know I have been in here a lot less than in the past.
Can't say it is because of anything more than work though.
Just haven't had the time to hang out at the coffee shop as much as I would like to.
Summertime is pretty busy for everybody.
I know it can be for me.
One thing I failed to mention in my earlier post was that in addition to the "General" board here, there are many more boards on this site and quite a few of them get regular posting.
If it's slow in general scroll on down the page and check out the other boards, often you will find active conversations.

I have very little computer time.
Working nites and sleeping days--most are going to work etc when I am just getting home.
I miss very much getting in here and taking on the big boys.

following the political and religious hate the tore this communiity in two; those that were doers and not talkers left. They have gone to stable forums were the basis of discuss is homesteading versus the Political democrat vs republican or Religious protestant vs catholic vs Muslim flame wars.
New folks for whom this is the life and every day habit will come and the forum will once again be great. Possibly.
