I know I just posted a question about outhouses built over pits, but I am trying to figure out whether I want to go that route, or try to build an outhouse used with 5 gallon recepticles for a composting toilet. If you build a composting toilet that involves the use of 5 gallon buckets, can you set it up so that you don't have to separate solid and liquid wastes?

Here's a system that will fit the bill. Doesn't cost an arm and a leg either.. ;)

The seat on the privy kit is cheepo but that can be changed easily. Has the makings for a great inside system.. 8)

I have been using two owner-built composting toilets with a common tank for over twenty years now and offer following observations:
1. There is no capacity that is too big. Mine two have a combined capacity of 384 cubic feet (8'x6'x6') and came close to exceeding capacity before the three teenagers moved out. With two people and occasional visitors, it runs achieves steady state and require clean out every other year. Any tank smaller than 100 gallons will require almost weekly attention.
2. At some point in it's use, every composting toilet (maybe not the plastic, completely indoor models) will have an insect problem. Forget scaling water, insecticide, etc. What works best is fly paper. four strips keep our tank fly-free.
4. Carbon, in the form of leaves, etc. should be finely shredded before use. The first time I cleaned out my tank, I found completely undigested two and three year old leaves.
5. Don't let anyone (particularly local government) know what you are doing. I have a twenty-year-old permit for mine which I am sure would now be voided if they knew.
