as most of you know there was a recent post by Bones about how firearms prevent crimes & save lives. i read a few lines of the thread & realized just as Rick O Shea did that i was already familiar with most if not all of those cases. i really had nothing to add to it cause i felt i already said it before so ok....nice post & i moved on.
now along comes Rick O Shea, who is already in a bad mood, cause he just got another bill for the loan he took out to pay for the 12 times he failed finishing school. in typical O Shea eloquence, he kindly suggested posting that kind of subject in a thread already dedicated to that.
next the forum sheriff himself weighs in (not one of them new forum deputies;) ) & lets Rick know who is boss & who has a right to post whatever & not to smell up the place so people are scared away.
then Bones comes back & everyone is mad. i think everyone involved has a valid point. but i really like Ricks point & here is a way i think would be better for the forum in general. we already have a billion topics in this forum & i dont think we need more. however i think that having some sticky threads for things like the border, guns preventing crimes, global warming, & even organic/conventional farming would be a good idea to consolidate topics. people may remember me suggesting having a frostbite section all for himself. i was serious about that cause it was all the same stuff & many posts here are basically the same argument over & over.

And annie says they are both right.
I go to 3 forums--no biggie---but had read the same post by others---over and over again.
Bones had the right to post it---Rick had the right to be undone by it.
nuff said---Rick has a right to his opinion and Bones had a right to inform.
Freedom and rights belong to each of us--like it are not.

Well said Xanne.
I reckon a free society is a lot like a marriage, takes a lot of toleration to make the thing work.
I'm 60 years old and I've seen lots of married people argue. I've yet to see a winner of any of them arguements.
I've also learned that it is a good idea to duck a fight whenever you can. There'll be enough fights you can't duck.

When I rule the world, order will finally prevail...or else ;-)
Hey...I don't know Bones or hardly anyone...and I wasn't in a bad mood...it's just that I've got this sh!tty 56k dialup out here in the boonies, and it takes long enough to download stuff without it being packed full of irrelevant crap...the web and web forums have been around for long enough now that it just irks me to see people vomit stuff wherever they feel like it...I'm not censoring them or anything, it just smacks of ignorant laziness/noobishness...hence a few licks of flame.
I apologize to you, Bones, if my tone pissed you off...but have a go and try to see where I'm coming from eh? :-)
Olly can wear his shiny sheriff badge and ride around keepin' order if that makes him happy, I don't care about that...the Constitution does not apply to him, or any of us for that matter...but the manner in which we honor its principles in our private world does say something about us. Maybe Olly should bear that in mind.

Rick,
Sheriff Ollie and I have had that [[heated discussion]] more than once.
Read the bottom of his post--His sig line---I wonder sometimes in good conience how it remains there.
I too am on dial up--and the same stories may have different headers---it can be aggravating.
But Bones has always provided good info---I value that.
You have a clean sense of value---and a wit I admire it.

By some accounts some post take too much bandwidth and if most of the people already know what you are posting then don’t bother posting it. If that is the case lets look at the first page of the General Forum. We have a thread on the VA shooting I think all of us know about the shooting so why is it there? We have Suzy's Mom passed away and she posted there, maybe it should have posted with prayer request(I don’t read prayer request so I am glad she posted it where she did). Several posts could have been posted in Self reliance. My post on Miss America 1944 stopping a break-in had been suggested that it needed to be posted on the gun saves lives thread (buried somewhere on the forum) Except that would have been the wrong place. She did not save any lives (except maybe the thieves). She could have just let them go on their way. They had not threatened her. They had only broken into her barn. If a person had read further in the article they would had learned quite a bit about this lady. She was from a great generation. She was the first red-haired Miss America, winning in 1944 as the representative from the District of Columbia. Her picture was on a B-17 that flew 68 missions over Nazi Germany in World War II. She performed in vaudeville and sold War Bonds. Mrs. Ramey, when she was 74 and living on a farm north of Eubank. She wanted to save the tobacco industry from possible extinction and get farmers back on their feet. . . Ramey said her family has grown tobacco for 350 years and she has been a tobacco farmer for 50 years. . . Acting as her own lawyer and seeking $300 billion in damages, Ramey filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Justice Department. The lawsuit accuses the government and President Clinton of trying ``to destroy a successful, lucrative American industry.''
Several posts as well maybe should have gone somewhere else in somebody's opinion. But the bandwidth used up still would have been the same. If you clicked on it would it have loaded quicker on a different sub-forum? Chances are you would not have clicked on it as some sub forums are buried far away. (I would prefer a return to the old style and have fewer sub forums but it’s not my forum so I live with it).
In your haste to get out information has anybody not posted something where maybe it would have been better suited elsewhere? My "Armed resistance stops murders cold" probably should have been posted on the never ending guns save lives thread. If I knew exactly where it was located and had thought about it being there. But it does not exactly jump out and bite you or wave a flag that say here I am post it here. I was a bit excited and tired as I had spent a good amount of time verifying the facts of what I had read. Trying to find facts that backed up what I had read or reputed the facts. So in my haste I posted it in the wrong spot. Admin could have moved it to the right spot would have made no difference to me. I did get rid of the graphic that might have been causing a slow upload for some. Although it could not have been that slow as I have dial up as well and it loaded at a normal speed for me.
Somebody has dial up and gets made when somebody post something that is too large to load quickly well don’t get mad at that person get mad at who keeps you on dial up. Here it’s the phone company holding us hostage with high DSL rates that keep me from changing. A person could spend all day here either reading posts and learning from them or get frustrated because they are not on the sub forums they feel they should be on. If I got frustrated every time I came to a forum I soon would not go to that forum. Life is too short I prefer to learn from the post then become upset. If I know it already I move on if I have something to add to the post I will maybe to disagree with what they said. Why is there a Rick Oshea vs Bones here? I don't see it as that. He made his comments I made mine. I think I could still drink a beer with him at a bar and have a pleasant conversation. You need to remember something Arguing with a Navy Chief is like wrestling with a pig everybody gets muddy but the Chief loves it. Life is too short play hard and get muddy!

hey bones thanks for the drive-by. i was just trying to get a few laughs or even some interest in this thread with the name of the thread & things like Rick flunking finishing school 12 times. regardless of how i began this thread i feel that i managed to achieve exactly the kind of conversation that i was looking for. everyone seems to have settled down & i actually see a lil mutual respect happening.
bones i was thinking exactly what you did about the forum having so many sub topics thats its sometimes difficult to decide or know where to post about something. i normally ask myself if the post i am about to make fits the category best. one of the probs with this situation is that it fits the criteria for both headers/topics. i guess you could say that these threads about GM foods should be in farming or health.
personally i liked the old forum better too. there have been discussions about more topics or less topics & i prefer less. sometimes i reply to a thread & forget where it was & cant find it quickly. regardless this is what we have & olly is trying to make everyone happy the best he knows how. you cant please everyone all the time. i also think that its unreasonable to think that people wont be posting threads that they start where they should. a perfect example is the photo section here. one category for pics of you & your family & one for your homestead. but people just put their separate ones up.
i just want people to lighten up sometimes too. i know rick is an equal opportunity offender & i think i can recall a time where he was kinda rude to me but i didnt care a bit. & bones your responses werent needed by me cause i already knew where you were comin from.
in order to do my part in "SAVING THE FORUM!", i will help with ricks download time. in the very near future i will remove my animated avatar & sig. this could speed up ricks loading of a forum page by maybe 10-15 seconds if he has a really crappy connection. i will only use them on special occasions. also i know this should really be in the computer section but www.speedquide.net has some pretty good registry tweeks that can improve your speeds by up to 15%. i increased my speeds on all of my different connections about 10%.
so i guess in the end it may have been my fault rick was mad at his slow page loading. sorry bro! anyway to make amends i can help you out with a great job thats gonna be vacant in june. rosie o'donnel is leaving "the view" & i think you should replace her. now that would be funny!

I'll second that...this forum has around 80 categories.....that's completely ludicrous, IMHO.....it takes way to long to scan through so many boards for those of us who only have dial-up.
I vote for the old format!
