View Full Version : Disappointing trend I see

I've been posting messages on the board for a while now and I've noticed a change in the focus of the membership recently. It seems that the board members are focusing more and more about political/rights issues and less and less about serious homesteading issues. I've noticed also that many sections of the board don't get messages for weeks at a time on topics that I think are very relevent, where as the politics section gets messages hourly. For example, I recently posted messages about "finishing my cabin roof" and "combination fruit trees" that got a few responses. Then, I posted a message about being questioned at a roadblock, and got 42 responses! I think that is a little unbalanced. I think we need to get back to more discussion about day to day homesteading problems and worry less about liberals, jack-booted thugs, and the Zionist comspiracy!

I'd post more in general if this site worked faster. It is one of the slowest sites I visit.
I do not have the time, this site's speed being a big factor, to look at every board here. THere are certainly a lot of boards here.

A belated congrats on the roof! It is a LOVELY feeling when a building becomes weather-tight!

I confess: I tend to read about the things that I am thinking about, and letting the others slide! The water is too cold to fish, and so I am NOT! reading the fishing thread right now!

True, I have some frozen bait put by, but it would just TEASE me to read about others fishing trips!

So I have not been. :-[ And, since I have been too busy to build, I have not visited the building site for 2 whole months! :-X

Perhaps that is why I am not a more prolific poster? Hmmmmmm.....

And, yeah, there is a LOT of talking about politics and WORRYING about politics!

Too much so, in my opinion. Most of us are capable enough to make out regardless, and even if our kids do not follow our lifestyle they know HOW to follow our lifestyle, so they can make their own way if they must.

I care about politics because I would rather not see *this country struggle: I do not WORRY about politics because this country can do remarkable things if it has to. I would just rather that it did not HAVE to, is all!

So, while I might TALK about politics, I rarely WORRY about politics! But, a LOT of people who come here DO worry, and I cannot help that. So, they fret and worry and come here to talk about it.

I come here for joy, but a LOT of people are watching for things to crash. That is WHY they are interested in self-reliance! Not for the joy of seeing the hens on a rainy day walk into the hen house they made for them, and not for the joy of putting the fresh-picked fruit into a pretty bowl on the table: they are craving security.

To THAT, all that I can say is that the current stock-market and economy problems are a hiccup and it has been much worse, and the country was fine. Yes, some countries hate us but that is not new, the countries that hate us are wasker than the countries that USED to hate us, and we made out fine. Some of the politicians who want power make me shudder, but that has ALWAYS been true and we are all still here.......

Yes, we need to be alert to shove this nation in the directions that we think it needs to go, but too many people WORRY about it! This nation does not die of its mistakes, it fixes its mistakes or learns to live with them!

As do we all.

Txanne

Well rigth now i am in a place in life where--politics--freedoms are more my focus.

I dont have a place for a garden---aint building nothing---

BUT I do visit as many of the different boards as I can---seldom post on them---BUT I do read them.

Yes I think there's too many boards--BUT that gives each one that come here a place--to post or read--

I posted a thread ohhhh so long ago and pitched a fit when NOONE posted to it. How dare people ignore my post----well someone was kind enough to tell me to get over myself--if it was of interest at the moment---someone would post to it.

That taught me one thing----the tides of change affect us all in different way---posts in the winter or different than summer---etc etc.

As Terri stated--there's much worry over politics and the state of this nation.

Different interest ebb and flow.

It'll be ok--btw--did you ever see the roof I put
on my house--it was a beauity!! I had it posted--

People need a place to vent about their frustrations--and sometimes its here on the freedom/political boards OR the General.

Maybe tomorrow will be a better day for ya--Good luck.

kawalekm,

Part of the problem, as I see it, is that many of the people who would be reading and responding in the various homesteading boards left when things got dicey here last year. There was simply too much nastiness and it turned off too many folks.

But things have changed and BHM very much wants to bring this Forum back to where it used to be, before the troubles.

Now that we finally have moderators, I believe people will feel much more comfortable about participating in the discussions.

Please stick with us for a while as do our best to rebuild.

Thanks.

Oliver

Hi Kawalek,

We are at a place in our lives when we no longer need to find our homestead. We have been on it for 20 years. We still garden, preserve our food, spin wool, bake bread, etc.

However in the last 7-8 years we are discovering more and more how business, politics and religion are intruding into our lives and not for the good!
As a family all of my grandchildren are being homeschooled primarily because of our concern at loss of freedoms, including practicing our faith. *I think you will find more and more people here in this forum and at HT and the Gulch share that concern.

Dave Duffy in his latest book shares a few of our concerns. Each magazine contains his opinion about politics and business. *These topics will continue to intrude more and more into our lives and we need to be as prepared or more prepared than our BOBs.

I hope that will explain why some of us are always checking our those topics.

I think there are a lot of us who were on the "original" BWH forum who remember how it used to be, when every subject was just posted in a list and it didn't matter whether it was: "how do I can peas?" "How do I make goat milk soap?" or "the city is threatening to take my land, what do I do?" all in one big JUMBLE...

each thread then had all the posts under it...

You could quickly scan down the list and read and post under whatever interested you...

I think this was about 1996 or 1997....

It was a great way that folks who had been on their homesteads for a while could help those of us who would still in the learning stages!

That should be the focus of the forum now...helping each other!!!

I admit I often check the general board and don't have time to check or post the other boards....I've been trying to be better about that.

Kaw----You inspired me to write about mydandilions this a.m.

I hope it willl stay on the general board and not be moved, so people who usually are not interested in these wild herbs will get a glimpse of the wonders of nature right under their feet.

I like it when everything is all on one board because we get a glimpse into all kinds of things i never even go to now, about building and animals, etc.

Before, things changed, i learned a lot about a lot of things and loved it.

I remember elizabeth asking all kinds of things, and fred and others telling her all kinds of things about building and fixing her trailer, and other projects of hers, and it was fun.

If it had been under "building" alone, i'd never have been interested enough to go there, but when it came to me, i read it, and it was really interesting. love, alma

I agree that there are way too many boards and topics. Ideally there would separate sites entirely for some of this stuff, and there is. Personally I think this forum tries to cover too much territory. For example I dont ask woodworking questions here, I go to woodworking forums where I am bound to get more answers than this forum could provide.
This site is the only place I've found that is great for getting info on self-reliance, with people who understand the importance of self-reliance. But when it comes to investing, woodworking, guns, knives, reloading, car, pets....I'll go to the sites that specialize in those things, with possibly a few exceptions.
This site is second to none at self reliance issues, I would hope it stays that way and keeps it focus.

i'm testin the water... A few years ago I was more or less regular, but someone here died, and it was said to be faked, I got pissed off and blew out... A couple years went by and I decided to see the USA on a motorcycle, and that took 10 months.

One day recently I though to drop in and see whats up.

So far there are a few gals that float my stick, and are fun to chat at, then there is one guy I'ld like to ring his neck just for fun....

I hear ya though, because I posted in the "oonly one gun thread" for kicks, and no one has replied yet...

I also posted in a older thread about having fire in a nylon tent, but that guy mush have flamed out and be dead...

Then another on makin fire, which I still remain the last post in... admittedly dated....

My first 4 days here I thought it was about 5 folks in all still left....

As for me I am something of a do it yerselfer, making do, or going with out, and a spinney little hard ass.. But you knew that by now....

I missed yer thread on the roof so far... I am making a poor attempt at keeping things more or less current.

The poly tics piss me off... Just before I did go on my trip I had been looking at a cabin. it was $33,000.00 and one day before I left it was $165,000.00 with out so much as a new nail..... And everything else here went up 100,000.00 too....

I am not a money man , I don't do the company man bs, and no matter how hard I tried something went wrong.... No longer to I have much interest.. Prices are just to high, and I do more for free work helping folks than I should, but so be it....

I do leather ,wood, and forge work, plus make repro Trade Silver.. I have 18th 19th and 20th century tools for wood and use them. I am a x foreign car tech so I can do a lot off things over a wide variety of jobs..... Anyway thats my story and Im' stickin to it.... ;D

Ok One good example that I don't know about your cabin yet is that thread right here on OJ Simpson is better than a year old, and yet after the last post in 06, some 13 months pass and someone brings it up as currrent! >:(

In 06 it was a dead horse, as I recall living in a tee pee as my last year of 3 or better than 1,095 days on a row, and so was lucky to miss the whole mess...

On the other hand I was lucky to not end up a juror too..

I know my typing sucks, and today it really sucks because I have this little condition, no one probably ever heard of... Since that would create wondering and is a pandora's box statement what I have is called Clusther Head Aches... I'm not bitch and whining, but I won't bother to try reading my typos when I am like this.... Thats how spinney hard asses are... ;D

HUH LOL LOL--Chunks---I had no land line phone--or I could have bought a genie and hooked up with you'll sooner.
Didnt have the funds for solar--and knew just a tiny bit about 12v systems--of course i have learned a great deal from you since then!!

Lap tops werent even a consideration--too new and expensive.

I was able to get on line after Hurricane Rita--had phone service--it was the only utility that made it--with a genie and that land line i was able to get on here--but it was sporadic.

Living off grid brings a whole new way of life for you--you know that.
The last year--the kids insisited on a cellphone--boy that was a trip--usually to the end of the road--10 miles to find them thar bars!!

Pinetree, have to agree with you. for us it's tater planting time right now (almost, waiting for the right sign), but who wants to hear about that, we are all worried what is happening to our country, us in other words, in connection to our government.

Mac, my brother has cluster headaches. He is a long haul driver. At times his get so bad he has go to the closest emergency room and check in to a hospital. They usually put him out and the company has to fly in another driver.

You may not be looking for a pitty party but those that don't know what they are have NO idea how hard it is to see a grown man go to his knees because the pain is so bad.

From what I have heard they aren't really looking very hard for a cure.

i dunno i sure wish that my only worry was when to plant my potatoes.....not making a joke at all but i really mean that. i read the other threads besides politics & post when i have something to add. some people call those that only post on politics threads trolls. i am too involved with a million things & i apologize for not being able to post on everything that interests me.

in order to sound hip lemme say "i feel ya!" i love the articles & the inspiration & ideas i have gotten from the magazine. lets face it though, politics/current events is the hot topic of the country. we all may not plant potatoes but we have that common ground/arena where we debate/fight.

I think conversations ebb and flow with the tide, so to speak. Just like conversations IRL do. Some days folks want to talk about politics... some days folks want to talk about planting gardens. It's just the way that conversations flow. I'm not sure there's anything to be done about it but simply ride the tide and try to enjoy it.

There will ALWAYS be serious things to worry about!

The trick is to only worry productively. You worry a while, go over the options, do what you can, and then find something ELSE to think about! Something less stressfull.

Something that brings flavor to life: something like planting potatos.

Yes, I COULD worry about some serious things right now, but I am not going to. I already went over enough while it was raining out. Right now, the sun is shining and I am on a break from working outside. I have some important things to work on some more, but I have worked on them enough for right now!

There are trellises to be moved and an onion bed to set up: tomorrow I will go to the feed store and I will buy onion sets while I am at it, so I will want the onion bed ready today.

I thought about the hard things last week and I will work on them more in a couple of days, but, meanwhile there is the garden to get in.

It is part of what keeps me mentally healthy.

A smart man once told me:

'There are two kinds of problem in life, the kind you can fix, so fix it and don't worry about it. The other kind you can't fix, so since it's out of your hands, don't worry about it.'

Not always easy advice to follow, but it's helped me at times.

I don't want to rip off the thread.. I made mention due to not being able to deal with typos.... The spelCheck runs real slow on my system as well....

And I didn't believe anyone would know what I was talking about, and or would misunderstand the condition, which pisses me off to no end... I can talk about this with medical folks, and end up hearing "Oh I know exactly what you mean!" "I hate having to take 3 advils at one time too!"

At hearing these things I makes me want to reach out a choke the breath of the ignorant fool....

Kudsu is something new being worked with these days...

yer right Nanc, no one is really working on this hard either. So far most of the work done is to abort, not cure..

I am not seeking pity, and have a certain distain for it. Your "driver" must be chronic, which I am not thankfully....

Since I can't function under attacks I retreat... But I fight on my own terms then with the beast... With lesser things wrong I have learned to tolerate pain, and so was able to ride this country from SD to Cal, Cal to Fla,Fla to Ar, where my busted ribs finally healed... Ask yer driver if he ain't stonger for it?

Exhaust fumes---any asphalt work---cig smoke--mold fruit or etc.
And the store bought type room deoderizers--would send me to the Er begging for help---morphine was the drug of choice.

Before each headache--flashes of light in my left eye---smelling brewed coffee that wasnt being brewed.

They are so horrible painful--Mine stopped mysteriously in 1999---

I couldnt eat smoked meats---didnt drink so it wasn't alcohol---never cared for chocolate--

Couldnt go to Houston for the exhaust fumes---make me so sick.

Drs. suspected a severe sinus condition --that you cant tell is there.

kawalekm, I guess that rugged, individualistic people just have a greater capacity for sinking their teeth into such issues. We all need our moment on the soapbox ;-)

Forgive me for going off topic a bit but thinking of hosting sites made me think of a mail I got from my hosting provider the other day.

They're offering eco friendly web hosting of all things, heres their blurb.

Eco Hosting

I think it will all end with a happy ewok party like at the end of "Return of the Jedi", with all the global warming heroes like Lord Gore sitting on their golden (mined with environmentally sensitive equipment so as not to cause greenspace erosion) thrones, with all of us peasants showering them with hydroponically (and sustainably) grown rose petals while singing sonnets about how they alone are our saviors.

Kawalekm:

Interesting observation. I used to be a "regular" here, until a certain "nastiness" invaded this board.

The "nastiness" I speak of is not just people taking a verbal stab at each other on "controversial topics", like immigration, the war in Iraq, 2nd Amendment rights, USING those firearms in self-defense, etc; I love "spirited debate" as much as anyone.

No, the "nastiness" I speak of was during these spirited debates, if one would verbally body-slam some of the liberal's view points that were expressed here, and shoot holes through their arguments with facts and posted references to OUR (conservative) side of the argument, then we would be labeled as "racists", "war-mongers", "isolationists", etc. Apparently, when some here called "A Spade a Spade", and called these yahoo's out on their BS, Admin got really worried about offending some one, and cut a lot of people off short, threatening suspensions, removal, etc. just because they used some "potty" language (I can see that objection, it is a family-oriented board), and generally returned the nastiness directed to THEIR opinions three-fold.

That's cool; it's Dave's board, and he can run it however he sees fit. And, the original premise of the board, Self-Reliance, is what MOST of the topics should be on, anyway. Maybe the newly-installed moderators will help out; time will tell.

However, as someone here stated earlier, Self-Reliant people are, by their very nature, a pro-gun, pro-Constitution, pro-God/Christian, anti- Big Government/Entitlement, and ESPECIALLY, anti-"politically-correct". They are an opinionated bunch, and most were not afraid to say what was on their minds.

But, after too much bickering, most people just found other venues to spend time on, with individuals of like mind.

I still drop in from time to time, but don't contribute too much these days; I might offend someone with my "racist" or "hate-mongering" views. The original forum was an excellent source of info and ideas, and it's kinda dried up without the old, informed people that used to frequent here. It is truly a shame.

Docsoos, yes, and no. I was here too.

There were poorly behaved people on both sides, there certainly were!

Though, the BIGGEST potty mouths were of the more conservative persuation, which might be why the powers-that-be came down on them the hardest! As in, the people got in trouble for their behavior, it is just that there were more conservative potty mouths than liberal, which is to be expected becaquse there are more conservatives here than liberal!

Yes, there were trouble-makers on both sides. It was all pretty disgusting, actually!

The original forum was an excellent source of info and ideas, and it's kinda dried up without the old, informed people that used to frequent here. It is truly a shame.

So very well put Doc--But the liberal whiners didnt leave--they just await another round.

farmboy, I think I must disagree with you on one thing. PC has invaded every aspect of our lives. People "feel" that they have a right to redress if offended. If you "feel" passionate enough about something, differing opinions can be seen as offensive.
One of the few things that admin has done right is the ignore button but then too late.

Many good people have left this forum, some to go to others while others are who knows where. Each provided something that made this forum unique and it is a pity that happened. It did and I would suggest that everyone try to keep your forum together.

i agree with the original poster. this is a homesteading board. there are many other forums (or would that be 'fora' in latin?) for politics.

personally, i don't post that much if i don't have something to add. i don't visit the political subsections because i don't particularly care what other people think about about politics. while i tend to be traditional conservative/libertarian, i don't need any back-patting by others that think like me. i don't waste my time replying to liberals because i have much more important things to do with my time. i am not a christian, and tend to dislike most people that are anything more than casually religious. bring "God" or "Jebus" or "Allah" or "Buddah" or any of that stuff into a thread, and that's where i hit the "Back" button.

i also have a few of those that bug me on 'ignore'

i come here to ask various questions when i need to and will answer those that i feel like i can.

as a true homesteader, as opposed to the windbags, i have very little time to sit on the computer since there is nearly always something going on here. summer is the busiest time of year, followed by spring, then fall, with winter being the time i tend to post most often even though we have winter projects to take care of here. this is why the bickering is not worth my time. i wish the board was more informative, and less fluffy, but so be it....

Wow, all the years I spent here and no one told me I am supposed to be a Christian to be self-reliant! *I must have missed the memo.

But I don't remember the magazine ever having anything religious in it and they seem to articulate their views just fine without being racist our using potty language.

[Deep Breath and a heavy sigh.....]

Farmboy, you just proved my point.

#1. If you read my post, I stated "Pro-God/Christian", I did NOT say you HAD to be a Christian, just that MOST were PRO-GOD, be you Muslim, Jewish, Catholic, etc. That's what the backslash was put into the sentence for, to mean "and/or". Guess public education has done it's work, eh? Or did you simply overlook that salient point? Separation of Church and State a sore point with you?

#2. I never stated that BHM had Christian views, only that A MAJORITY of Self-Reliant types do.

My statement/reply to the original poster of this thread was just my opinion, and my experience here on the BHM Forums in the past year or so. You so eloquently "jumped in" with a controversial challenge, and I have to admit, I have a "sweet tooth" when it comes to verbally body-slamming a "smart-mouth"(original wording changed to protect the easily-offended here) ;).

I do not wish to start a contest with you, I would only serve to embarass you in front of those here you are trying to impress with your intelligence. But, you did illustrate my point (that there are those here that will attack if their views are called into question) very well.

Enjoy your stay here, farmboy. ;D

That's your line. Verbatim. Your application of "most" however creatively expressed doesn't match what you actually wrote. The way you phrased it ALL Self Reliant People are Pro-god/christian.

Your phrasing indicates we either subscribe to a general belief in "god" or identify with and proclaim ourselves Christians. An A or B ascertation. Farmboy identified that there are other options and that Belief is not necessary for one to be Self Reliant.

Now if your posting had gone like this "However, as someone here stated earlier, Most Self-Reliant people are,".

Your Response to Farmboy would hold true. What do I know I slept in Highschool English.

If one has been reading the Respect thread. DocSoos reply would make an excellent example of how one can ve Courteous and Disrespectful at the same time.
