......with the front end of my van! :'(

We were coming back from taking DS to a doctor's appointment in CHicago. We were about 200 yards from town and crashed.

There was a jacked up truck coming from the opposite direction. He had his brights on and would NOT turn them off...even after I flashed him a couple of times. To make matters worse, they were those really bright hallogens. It ended up blinding me, so I was slowing down. About the time the front of his truck was even with me, a deer just stepped out about 5 feet ahead of me.

I didn't have time to swerve and hit the deer full force in the front-driver's side. It flipped him WAY up in the air. He flipped around at least twice and I was trying to keep from going into the ditch and then the river on one side , the other lane on my side and keep the deer from landing in the windshield. It seemed like forever when that deer was in the air.

He came down on the passenger side hood and rolled off where we hit him again and the front of the van went into the air. We finally stopped.

Of course at this point, DS starts belly laughing. He thought it was great fun ::)

It took the whole front driver's side off. My Mom was int he back of the van with DS. She had just straightened him in his car seat. Had she not, he probably would have broken his neck. She flipped over the seat. Her back, stomach, and ankle were sore today.

I have a nice big bruise from the seat belt across my shoulder and chest and whip lash. I also sprained my right ankle when I was STANDING on the breaks. DS is fine, and there were no others involved (except the guy in the truck who sped off when he saw we hit the deer).

I've got the antler that was sticking out of the hood of the van. The game warden came out to get the carcass. We were going to have it processed, but it was pulverized. YUCK! Plus, there were at least 3 trees worth of forms we had to fill out to be able to take it.

Its always something isn't it? :)

Glad to hear everyone is ok...........

but StephiLou,that's not how you're supposed to get them! ;)

All that just to take home one you hit? Wow.

Up here it's a form about the size of a large postcard.
Or one of those hotel "do not disturb" signs.

But you do have to actually see the deer get hit otherwise the cops won't give you a tag for it.

Take care.........and next time, use a gun like everyone else. :)

I am SO THANKFUL that you weren't all hurt seriously!!!!
There were two guys here several years ago who died after a deer with through the windshield of their car. They were on a rural road and they bled to death before somebody found them!

Also here they just have folks that they call to come and get the carcuses out of the road. I heard on the scanner night before last that somebody hit a deer and within minutes one of the locals had arrived on the scene to take it for processing. No forms, nothing.

I hope you get to feeling better and that your ankle doesn't hurt too badly! I hope your mom is o.k. now too. And of course I am doubly thankful that your sweet little one just enjoyed the whole thing, giggles and all!

Steph I am so glad that none of you were seriously injured. However, I do want to ask, why wasn't your mother wearing her seatbelt? In such an accident she could not only have become fataly injured but she could also have seriously injured someone else! 'Nuff said! God bless you folks and hope DS is doing better.

Thanks all. We got the preliminary estimate today, and it is about $5000 worth so far. The rafiator is in a "V" shape and the air conditioner condenser was smashed. The brake pedal was bent down and the anti-lock breaks will have to be replaced.

Mom had just taken off her seat belt to striaghten DS in his car seat. He is strapped in there as tight as it gets, but has a hard time holding his head up for such a long drive. It was hanging over the side, and he had also pinched off his feeding tube and the pump alrm was going off. She had just situated him when we hit. Had his head been hanging sideways the way it was, the force of the impact would have broken his neck.

She also jinxed us by saying how we hadn't seen any deer all the way back from Chicago! :( Then we got one up close! :)

Better today, still a little sore, but doing better.

Thanks again!

Thank God eveyone is o.k. Were you allowed to
get a rental car so you would have transportation?

Not a morning goes by where I live I see deer
and have to be real careful. My car does not
have a front grill because of deer. Car is paid
for and carry liability insurance only so I just live
with.

Early in the morning going to work, the speed
limit is 55 mph and I go 45 cause so many I know
have hit deer on this state highway. The cars
pass me going so fast. One morning, I noticed
an accident and later found out 2 people died.
Going too fast and hit a deer.

Yes, always something.

Wow, glad you weren't badly hurt. We have car/deer crashes here every day, and I know they can be pretty serious.

Kinda insult to injury, that you couldn't use the meat.

Any chance of replacing the van, instead of fixing? Seems they're never the same after that much damage.

I hit a doe last fall, and had no end of trouble trying to get a tag for it. The budget cuts took out half the road patrol, so there wasn't anyone who could stop by. I had it gutted and hanging, and they wanted me to load it in the truck and drive 40 miles to the county seat to show it to them and get a tag - with no guarantee that someone would be there to check it! Bah! I finally just put one of my antlerless permits on it and took it into the processor.

Hope the guy in the truck gets what's comin' to him.

it's really a lot easier and a lot more convenient to get your deer with a rifle -

Keep in mind, guys, that deer are coming into the rut. Those bucks have something on their mind that messes up their good sense. Us guys can understand how that works right? ;D Drive carefully right now, especially at dawn & dusk.

in January last year I counted 16 dead deer within a 7 mile stretch between here and the next town..all from one night....you are so blessed to have all come out of it okay... I sure worry driving here at night this time of year because of the deer!
I am glad you are all okay! You will have to save that antler as a reminder!!

I shot a buck and was taking it to the check station to be tagged and a doe ran across the road right in front of me. I darn near had two, but the second would have been expensive with the vehicle repair. We have repair shops here that advertise as deer collision specialists so that should tell you something. ;)
