If you own a backpack, purse, fannypack, briefcase, or any other
type of "bag" then this applies to you. The topic here is gross
but not something many of us think about everyday......
but we should.

This is for the guys as well....
please let your wife / girlfriends know!

Where has your purse or bag been???

Probably true of diaper bags too, and backpacks.
So think where you put them........

Have you ever noticed gals who sit their purses on
public restroom floors then go directly to and place
them on their dining tables? Happens a lot!

It's not always the 'restaurant food' that causes
stomach distress. Sometimes "what you don't know
'WILL' hurt you"!**Read on.....

Mom got so upset when a guest came in the door and
plopped their purses down on the counter where she
was cooking or setting up the buffet. She always
said that purses are really dirty, because of Where
they have been.**Smart Momma!!!

It's something just about every woman carries with
them. While we may know what's inside our purses,
do you have any idea what's on the outside?

Shauna Lake put purses to the test, for bacteria,
with surprising results. You may think twice about
where you put your purse.**Women carry purses
everywhere; from the office to public restrooms
to the floor of the car. Most women won't be caught
without their purses, but did you ever stop to think
about where your purse goes during the day?

"I drive a school bus, so my purse has been on the
floor of the bus a lot," says one woman. "On the
floor of my car, probably in restrooms." "I put my
purse in grocery shopping carts, on the floor of
bathroom stalls while changing a diaper," says
another woman and of course in my home which should
be clean."

We decided to find out if purses harbor a lot of
bacteria. We learned how to test them at Nelson
Laboratories in Salt Lake, then we set out to
test the average woman's purse.

Most women told us they didn't stop to think about
what was on the bottom of their purse. Most said
they usually set their purses on top of kitchen
tables and counters where food is prepared. Most
of the ladies we talked to told us they wouldn't
be surprised if their purses were at least a little
bit dirty.

It turns out purses are so surprisingly dirty, even
the microbiologist who tested them was shocked.
Microbiologist Amy Karen of Nelson Labs says nearly
all of the purses tested were not only high in bacteria,
but high in harmful kinds of bacteria.

Pseudomonas can cause eye infections, staphylococcus
aurous can cause serious skin infections, and salmonella
and e-coli found on the purses could make people very
sick. In one sampling, four of five purses tested positive
for salmonella, and that's not the worst of it.

"There is fecal contamination on the purses," says Amy.

Leather or vinyl purses tended to be cleaner than cloth
purses, and lifestyle seemed to play a role. People with
kids tended to have dirtier purses than those without,
with one exception. The purse of one single woman who
frequented nightclubs had one of the worst contaminations
of all. "Some type of feces, or even possibly vomit or
something like that," says Amy.

So the moral of this story - your purse won't kill you,
but it does has the potential to make you very sick if
you keep it on places where you eat. Use hooks to hang
your purse at home and in restrooms, and don't put
it on your desk, a restaurant table, or on your kitchen
countertop.

Experts say you should think of your purse the same way
you would a pair of shoes. "If you think about putting
a pair of shoes onto your countertops, that's the same
thing you're doing when you put your purse on the
countertops" your purse has gone where every individual
before you has spat, coughed, urinated, emptied bowels,
and more! Do you really want to bring that home with you?

The microbiologists at Nelson also said cleaning a purse
will help. Wash cloth purses and use leather cleaner to
clean the bottom of leather purses.

THIS IS WORTH SHARING!!!

I got this in an e-mail a while back, it makes you think twice about where you set your purse down.

I will never look at my purse the same way.

I usually carry one with a long shoulder strap--But have been known to set it down in places---

Yikes!!

I am going to practice a different approach--concerning my purse for sure.

Hmmm, I've never thought about this. I carry a cloth tote bag and usually hang it on the handle of my walker when I go potty in public restrooms. I carry a tote bag because sometimes DS carries it for me. ;) Anyway, I DO put it on the dining room table and have been known to put it on the counter top. EWWW and YUCK. I think I will toss it in the washing machine tomorrow. Then I will make sure I KNOW where I put it down from now on.

Thanks for posting that. It really makes you think.

I had a teacher way back in 8th grade who sprayed my purse with lysol after some boy had grabbed it and sat it on the floor. He said he was killing cooties. ;D

It got me thinking though about what else could be on that purse. I have disinfected every purse I've had since then daily or every couple of days and avoid sitting it down on any suspicious surface.

Interesting,I never really thought too much about it,but I have never set it on the floor in a restroom, and for the most part it never really goes any further than the top of the dog's crate when I bring it in the house.

Gives you some things to keep in mind though.

Thanks!

I carry a tote bag most of the time and admit that I have put it on the floor of a bathroom stall. Many don't have anywhere, coathook or shelf or anything for you to put them on. When I go to a restaraunt I do tend to put it on the table if I need to make sure I have somewhere to sit. This is generally only during the lunch rush at my favorite place and I'm not up to carrying a tray to their upstairs dining area! Since my food is on a tray I leave the dishes on it while I'm eating and if I get bread I put it on a small napkin instead of directly on the tray itself. While I eat my bag goes on another chair. Also, my tote bags are washable and I usually throw them in the washer weekly if they need it or not.
To me it is only common sense not to pick up food you've dropped on the table or floor and eat it or feed it to a kid or the like. IT BELONGS IN THE TRASH CAN IF IT'S BEEN DROPPED!
Along the same lines there was an article in the paper the other day that said cell phones have more germs on them than the soles of your shoes. Many people loan out their phone and lay it down in many places where it can pick up germs. I tend to wear something with pockets so my phone is in either my tote bag or my pocket and unless you're related or a very close friend I won't loan it to you.

MyellowRose brings up a very good point about all the
other things in our lives we treat with so much disregard
for cleanliness. Some so gross we might as well share TP! :o :o

What is missed here is that the transfer of all these germs, viruses
and bacteria could be deadly if there were to be any sort of disease
pandemic!! :o :o YOUR careless handling of your "bag" or "property"
could literally set in motion the death of millions.

All that said, personal cleanliness and hygiene has taken on a new
meaning. One really can kill others and not use any sort of "weapon"
just use a few germs...........

Yep, and that could be why the local stored here offer wipes for
shopping cart handles when you arrive.

Back in the stone age, I had to take a microbiology class. The teacher sent us all over the building to swab different places (toilets, water fountains, etc).
The swabs were transferred to culture media. Two of the girls swabbed their makeup and their cultures were full of dangerous bacteria. It was even more hazardous than the swabs from the public toilets. :o Change your makeup often!

Annie,
I always save the paper towel to open the door to the bathroom also, and I use me foot to flush the toilet. What really riles me is when I see someone come out of a toilet stall and walk right past the sink. You know that they are then out in the public touching everything. Ick!

Another thing. Many people carry the waterless hand sanitizer and use it instead of washing their hands. I admit to bypassing the sinks if there are no paper towels but blow dryers instead. Since the air intake on them is on the bottom they are said to suck in the bacteria from one persons hands only to blow it out onto the hands of the next person using them!
I'm also going to start carrying wipes to use on the toilet seat as most places don't have covers and I'm no longer able to "hover" over it as I did years ago. One of the hazards of getting old. LOL

"...and I use my foot to flush the toilet."

Ha Ha, and I thought I was the only one that does that. ;) Although sometimes it IS hard to do at the urinal. ;D

Eewwwww.
Never thought about it. Think I'll go wash mine, now.

At work the women moved all the trash cans next to the door and we, too, use the paper towel to open the door. The women are great handwashers, too. But, the men folk... they're another thing. You see them coming out of the men's restroom at work and we rarely hear the sink running.

Thanks for the great tip.
