Just wanted to say Hi! and I'm glad I came across this forum!! :D
I recently came across the word "homesteading" while looking up ways to save money and become more self reliant for my family. Boy did that open up more than I could handle!! lol I have been gardening for about 3 years now, with some successes and some failures. I love to can or freeze what I grow when possible.
My dream is to one day move back to W Va., buy some wooded acreage, and not to become completely self reliant (such as living off the grid), but to grow more of a selection of fruits and vegetables, with a couple of wood burning stoves to help save on gas, and some chickens and small animals to provide for hubby and me. Now like I said, it's a dream... but one I'm fighting for. Hubby loves the idea, but right now we have 3 girls in private school (city schools are not the safest here) and even before the economic hardships for the country began, we were living paycheck to paycheck. So, I call the above plan my dream, not being sure if it's attainable or not. For right now though, I want to do what I can, with what little money we have right now, to help us save money and not depend on others (i.e. grocery stores, less water from the city, etc.)
Whew!! Think I'm done! :D

Self Reliant is the way to be,
I don't worry where I take a pee..

Food growin' in my back yard,
Keep the city, and burn that credit card..

( I felt a little "Green Acreish" today..) ;D

Welcome to the mix.. ;)

Ty Native! I'm keeping it alive! As of this week I found out city residents can keep up to four chickens! Now it's just a matter of talking hubby into it! ;D

Welcome Shauna. Glad to add you to the mix. Don't worry about where you live. A lot of us here don't have our ideal place, but we do learn and practice as much as possible where we are.

Yahoo for the chicks. Most cities don't allow them so you're lucky in that respect. How 'bout just bringing um home ;) Hubby will love them when they're running around ;D

Ty for the welcome Jonvee! *Hubby said no dogs and we have two...large ones! rofl *And he loves them!! ;D *The biggest issue with the chickens is a coop for them. *Hopefully if we get a couple of extra dollars for materials I can convince him to use his wonderful building techniques to build me one! lol

How 'bout a doghouse with a fenced yard area. Sometimes they're easy to find on craigslist.
