DH and I bought 12 acres in NW FL almost 3 years ago. It was an abandoned homestead complete w/ramshackle farmhouse, 2 fenced pastures, chicken coops, hog pen, rabbit houses, garage, garden plot, pecan - pear - peach - fig - loquat - apple trees, scuppernong vines, blueberry and blackberry. Well with pipes ran to all animal areas and pastures, septic, and electric. House was built in 1941 and needs some work, but it's habitable.

In the meantime, I've just retired from the Navy and DH has 1 more year of active duty. We currently live approximately 2 hours away from the farm in a house we bought 14 years ago when stationed here before. As soon as DH retires, we have plans to "drive onto the farm and lock the gate behind us".

Until we are able to live on the farm full-time, we're doing as much as possible to learn all we can about homesteading and self-suffiency. Both of us grew up on farms and am looking forward to returning to that lifestyle.

Looking forward to gaining as much knowledge as possible from the folks who "are there, doing that"!

Congratulations! And thanks for the service - semper fi.

Sounds like you have a lot of resources crammed on that 12 acres. Post some pictures when you get a chance. Did you or the old man grow up in the country?

Lots of good folks and info here, along with a lot of personalities and BS. Like they say, every group has their 10%. Be sure to check out the magazine too - lots of articles with good info and they have an index by subject.

Pat
