Hi Everyone,

I came across this site today and, after reading through a good many of the posts, just had to join :).

I am completely new to the majority (if not all) things related to homesteading/sustainability/renewable resources, etc. My DH and I are looking at moving sometime around the end of this year. We've talked, extensively, about wanting to become more energy independent...living off the grid (*is that the right term?? I warned ya...I've LOTS to learn :P)

We're struggling to decide between building a new home or purchasing an existing home. An existing home, I feel, would be less expensive than building. On the other hand, I know if we built a home we'd be able to control many of the "green" features that we'd like to incorporate.

If we decide to go with an existing home...what should we be looking for that will make homesteading improvements easier in the future??

I have so many other questions, but I'll look through some more of the forums....and try to find the appropriate threads:-).

Thanks in advance to any/all who are willing to share inputs/ideas/information...I look forward to getting to know many of you here on this forum!

Welcome here, BOOkWOrm! You've come to the right place to get and also share information.

Living off the grid is do-able, and we have members who are doing it right now! I'm sure they'll be able to help you get started! Do you have plans on what kind of energy you will want to produce without being hooked up to the grid? (Wind, solar, hydro - or a combination?) Decisions, decisions! ;D

Hi CarolAnn,

How nice to already have a response!!

We have been talking about solar power for the longest time....and have just recently started reading information on magnetic power, through the use of reverse polarity. *DH was telling of a gent who was using this type of power and was able to power his community (approx. 8-10 houses) with this one unit. *The system has been online for almost a year now, with no glitches. *I can't describe it beyond that:-)...I could probably post a link though.

The are we are in (NC) and (from what I've read) our area isn't suitable for wind power....it would be nice, though!

Welcome BOOkWOrm!

Lots of great info here!
I'm a newbie to most of it also, but every day I learn a little more....
Magnetic power sounds interesting. I would love to read more about it.
