I have heard of a number of Backwooders in florida and east of the rockies. Try living in washington state on the east side of the mountains. I have been trying to locate a forum for homesteading for awhile now for washington state but I don't think there are any.

There is one for Washington State but it's not active at all. I've met quite a few people IRL from forums such as this one, but I am selective. I agree the group meetings are not the way to go - attracts the wrong kinds and I've heard that from several.
I think you need to hang out in a forum, post with other people and make connections that way if you want to do it through the web. Another way I have made many connections locally is through my interactions with other homesteaders to buy and sell stock. In this area there is a "goat group" that meets once a month on a farm for a potluck. The woman who sold me my Dexter's invited me even though I don't have a "goat". ;-) She only has one Nigerian dwarf goat wandering around her cattle called "Dog Bait" who she rescued. ;-) Virtually everyone in that group are true homesteaders and I learn alot from them. I would imagine that there are groups like that in other areas. Having a yard sale helped me meet several homesteaders, they stop by and we visit as much as sell anything or I also go to yard sales, especially the ones on small homesteads and farms and talk with the people holding the sale. They are generally bored with sitting around waiting for someone to show up! I met another organic farmer with a CSA this week who needed some of the Buffs I was selling for eggs for her CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).
It's been difficult for me to strike up conversations with strangers in real life but I've been amazed at how friendly people around here are when it comes to talking animals or gardening! Of course my pet peacocks help break the ice too when people come to visit!
Good luck, I am about as far from Florida as you can get in the lower 48 and FLorida is one of only two states I have not even visited in the lower 48 - the other being Rhode Island. ;-)
