Hello Everyone,
I am from Ladysmith Wi. I have Dexter cows and Boer
goats. I would like to learn a lot more about becoming
self reliant. The old house we lived at had two wood
stoves for heat. When we built this new house my
husband didn't want to burn wood anymore. Now it is
Lp and no back up. We have had two bad storms since
we moved to this town. 1 tornado that took out half the town. I think I need to learn how to be prepared.
ANy one else from WI.

Welcome! Great to have another person with Dexter's here. I just got my cow/heifer calf in October and I think the cow is pregnant but can't be positive yet. She was supposedly open in October but I am not so sure about that. Haven't seen her in heat.
She had twins last May - her first calving. What kinds do you have? Join us in Livestock to talk cows!
Unfortunately I am on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington so a ways away for sure.

Hello! Fellow cheddar-head from Oshkosh, though I'm currently wrapping up a tour in Japan. I am extremely interested self reliance and homesteading. How things were done before technology has always fascinated me, and I can't seem to get enough of it. Maybe someday I'll have a farm of my own and can apply what I learn.
I know what your talking about when it comes to back-up, one February our decrepit boiler gasped it's last and we were reduced to using the fireplaces for heat. I wish they had been built for heat rather than just show.
Welcome!

Hi, Becky - I'm from a small town near Madison, where I work in an office with a bunch of engineers and drafters. I've had wood heat but don't now - and also wish I did! (At least, as a back-up - it's crazy to live this far north and depend 100% on public utilities!!)

Hi Carolann,
I know living this far north with out a backup is crazy.
I kick myself everytime I hear there is a bad storm coming. I let my husband and Mother in-law talk me out of getting a wood cook stove. Seems it didn't go
with the decor of the house. Horse pucky. I am going to get a small cabin and put it out back. My husband always says I am waiting for the end of the world.
Well maybe but My kids are not going to freeze or
starve. We have had one tornado and one bad wind
storm since we moved here 20 yrs ago. Also 2 floods.
Still can't convice hubby to do any preparing. My son is
a type one diabetic. So need to have extra supplies for him. Have a great week.

Hello Becky! We went thru the tornado experience May 5th, the same day as our wedding anniversary. Some way to celebrate 28 years! We got hit the night after Greensburg badly, but we also were hit the same night as Greensburg w/90mph winds. We were froze out in our orchard that spring, and flooded with 29" of rain in May after the tornado. Following that, we had a 9 day ice storm w/o power. Altogether, we had 19 days in 2007 w/o power, so we're getting better at it...
Hope this year is kinder to us all!
