Hi All. I'm Ryan, originally from Michigan and am currently USAF stationed in Europe. I'm looking at moving to Alaska when my enlistment is up in '09, and a friend turned me to this mag/forum to get prepared for the type of life I want to live out there.
I will be subscribing to the mag soon and hope to learn as much as possible and meet a lot of great people on here. This and martialcanine45 are my usernames; I'll stick with ...45 but initially registered with it to an email I can't access at the moment!
Talk soon!

I am involved with electronics in the radar field. Been in for 5 years, 4 of it over here. May extend my enlistment if I can get assigned to Alaska. It's the polar opposite of where I am stationed. I grew up in rural Michigan but it has changed so much and so have the people; it's not the same anymore, and Michigan doesn't have much to offer anyway.

Welcome to the Forum.
If you haven't already discovered it, check out our library of online articles. You'll find lots of stuff that will help you prepare for your new life in Alaska. Click on "Article Index" in the navigation menu to the left.
Also, check out Ask Jackie Clay, Ask Jackie Online, and her blog. Jackie lives the life and may know more about homesteading, self-reliance, and independent living than anyone else in America.
Again, welcome, and thank you very much for your service.

Welcome:
I don't know if they are still doing it but the mag was offering a free subscription to active duty military personel. My son is a Marine and I encourage him to subscribe.

Welcome, retired after 30 myself.

Welcome Ryan,
I am a nubbey around here too. I was stationed in Nellingen Stuttgart Germany area from 1984 to 1992. I was with the 45th MEDEVAC. One of the other pilots and I loved to fly up to Bitburg and drool over the guns and reloading equipment in their Rod & Gun Club. I retired about 4 years ago.

Hey Ryan, I am new too. I did 3+ years in Wiesbaden back in the mid 80s. Great tour! I have very fond memories of that area. Also spent time in the U.P. in the from 78' to 80'. Beautiful area but not my cup of tea. I prefer the south now days. Once the temps drop below 60 I turn into a baby.
