Just dropped by to introduce my self...Looking forward to posting but figured better introduce myself first... ;D
Lived most my life in Idaho...great place but undergoing a tremendous ammount of change with the influx of folks moving here...still a great state though...
I moved out of town about 16 years ago looking for a slower and simpler lifestyle...It's worked out for the most part but town is getting closer all the time...that urban sprawl thing...
Well looking forward to meeting you on the boards...Apologies in advance for my slowness and attrocious spelling... :-[

hi shortstack welcome to the forum i have been to idaho once it was at gowen field af base was on a security team as someone had threatned to harm the vice pres at the time . also went out in the field for some training thought it was real nice there i wouldnt mind living there myself but the wife wants to stay near family :-/ they fed us steaks and baked potatos darn near every day :) boy was they some big taters!! do you hunt fish or trap there? nice meeting you

Don't trap but sure like to hunt and fish... ;D
Get the itch to roam and go camping or put on the backpack for some high county R&R...best way I've found to recharges the old batteries...;D

I must say I was impressed with Idaho the other day watching c-span. Saw two of your politicians on there and they seemed like guys who knew thier own mind and had no intention of following the rest of the crowd in Washington.

Says a lot for a state now days that they elect honest men to represent them.

It was mostly an excuse to get out of the house and go exploring...not that I really needed an excuse... ;D
Best find was an amathyst bout as big around and half as long as hotdog...probably not the best analogy...but I was up in the Owyhees and following a stream bed up the mountain when I looked down into the water and there it was...
nothing but blind luck...
Spent a a day or two up on the Boise river dranage turning my fingers and toes into prunes panning for gold and not a whit of luck...
Unless you figure getting to spend summer days in the high county as luck...

Thought about relocating to Priest River area. Heard prospecting might show enough color to augment income. Do you metal detect any for gold?

Hey riverdog,
I've prospected with my Dad between Stanley and Challis some nice streams thru there that you can pick up a flake or two. Dad had a couple of mining claims before he died. One was north of Salmon up in the mountain's. We would pull out iron ore, pound it down and sluice it out to black sand and gold. He also had a claim up on the Centennials north of here we were pulling gold out of quartz, a nice vein but could never find the main rock, we were just working an outcrop. Beautiful rock though sold it to lots of people for fireplaces and buildings.

grandmajoy, bet the memories with your dad are the true GOLD. You found it after all didn't you? Sounds real fine. Hope to pass thru N Idaho within a year , year and half. Heading to Wash state and then......who knows. My brother wants to prospect Alaska/ Yukon river some. Told him I get up there I gonna stay! Trout, moose steaks..........oh mama git them taters!

I live near the town of Priest River and on the Priest River itself and haven't heard of anyone finding gold around here. I 've never seen any prospectors either.

Just read a bit about gold miners that used to placer prospect up that way. May not be worth while now days. Photos I have seen of your area are well, to die for. You are lucky to live that aways.... Do you fly fish any? I hear there are lots of good creeks and the Priest river/ lake supposed to be full of fat lake trout.

No, learning to fly fish is on my list to learn. Yes, there are a lot of good trout streams...the Priest is a bit warm in the summer, but we have a pond on our property that is full of brookies.
