Hi, I'm new to this site, but have been reading/ lurking for awhile. Sounds like a whole lot of diverse, interesting people.

We live near the S.F. Bay area and work together in the city. Married, going on forever, 3kids+ 2steps and a herd of g'kids.

We own 3+ acres of pine and oak and poison oak near Jones Valley, Ca. N.E. of Redding, Ca. That's our paradise in less than 6 years when we retire. We so far have put in a well and built a pump-house/ storage shed. No electric yet, just a small generator. Planning to start on a house next year. Hope to go solar.

I love to can. Family says if it ain't moving, Moms gonna put it inna jar. Son keeps nudging my old dog to keep him moving. I have a small garden and a bunch of fruit trees that keep me busy after work.

I bet you'd love a canning/laundry gazebo like my Stone County neighbors had. (Have - They're still there & have it, I'm just not a neighbor any more!)

Their well is out in a field, so he built a screened-in gazebo. There resides a gas cooker, jar storage under the counter, a sink that doubles as a laundry tub, a gasoline-powered Maytag wringer washer, and a wood-burning water heater. The water tank is a 55 gallon drum up on stilts for gravity feed & painted black to pre-heat the water. Since their well doesn't produce much, they can slowly fill the tank so there's plenty on high-use days. This set up keeps the heat and humidity of washing clothes and canning out of the house, and lets the cooling breezes through without admitting bugs.

And if you've never seen one, a gasoline-powered Maytag has a kick-starter just like a motorcycle with the attending exhaust! (Another great reason to have it out in the field!)
