Could you all post some pictures of the interior/inside of your homestead? My place is pretty small, and I'm trying to come up with some ideas on how to set it up. Kitchen area, shelving, storage areas, space saving ideas, that kind of thing. Thanks in advance!

Mine is close to 23x25. I figure about 950 sq ft of living space (including two small bedrooms upstairs), but the kitchen area is very small, so I want to make the best use of the space I have for storage, shelves, and cabinets. I'll try to post a picture.

The kitchen area is about 13' 8" by 5 to 6'.

The kitchen area starts just beyond the white PVC pipe.

I saw an article about Tumbleweed Tiny Homes. They had some neat set-ups for smaller places. Might get some ideas from their website.

Thanks Guy's!
Beautiful kitchen Uncle Jim!! I want to try separating the kitchen with a bar like you have. I just don't know if I have the room. The track lighting was another idea I've been kicking around.

Thank You. I am very happy that I put the bar top in. It separates the two rooms without crowding them and we find ourselves eating at the bar more than the dining room table. also - it gives me more cabinet space beneath it on the kitchen side. I tried to post more pics but I kept getting the photobucket box telling me they have been moved or deleted, which they haven't.

I can post them on other forums but not here ???

Yeah I have a thing for natural wood. *Most of the wood in my home is from trees I cut down and milled on my portable mill. *I'll try to post more pics if I can figure out where the glitch is coming from.

This is the opposite side of the bar top.

I have a small home also. I have 3 teens and I swear I can never find my stuff. Tools, gloves, the boys even borrow my bullets. Get you some space and secure it. With kids, always hide your flashlights LOL Terry

A good place to get ideas on tiny kitchens is to look at galleys in boats (small sailboats especially) and RVs. You can find all kinds of storage ideas there.

Chris,

Before I had a nice kitchen I used different pieces of furniture to make up for the lack of cabinets. For example, I used a bookcase to put canned goods and dishes on-you could always cover it with fabric-like they used to do under sinks. (I also saw them do that on a home improvement show where they took one of those hutches with legs and put a skirt around the bottom so that they could hide storage underneath.) I also used a small hutch in the kitchen for more storage. I used to keep my potatoes and such in big wicker baskets.
Even now I have a pretty double wide bow front dresser in my dining room that I use for a side board. Lot's of storage in the drawers for placemats and such, and then on top you have a nice serving area. I found it at an antique store for 120.00. On the other side I put an antique vanity that I took the mirror off, and I use that for odds and end storage and more serving room (we have people over a lot) All of these things can be found at yard sales and such and painted if the finish is a little shabby.

Thanks for the ideas CapeCMom! I've been looking at some of those hutches/old cupboard and bookshelves and seeing possiblities. I was also thinking about those fairly inexpensive pantry type cabinets at wally-world that you put together yourself. Those could hold a lot of canned food and things. I still haven't put in kitchen cabinets yet. I'd like to put up some drywall first, but I'm waiting for warmer weather. I sure hope it's not long for that!

If you get cabinets - getting the hardware that slides out or shelves that pull out and maximize the height woudl allow for much more storage. I have lots of space in my small kitchen but most of it is wasted because you can't get to it efficiently.

I also got an island on wheels - found it on Craigs list and not only does it store stuff but gives me valuable counterspace where I need it. I've also spread my kitchen storage into other rooms in order to fit in all of the food stores. Our house is about the same size you are talking about - about 900 sq ft with two small bedrooms and a bath. If there is an Ikea near you, they have great deals on storage and a huge selection so you can get the exact measurements you need. I have many Ikea cabinets that I moved across country! Still their shelves, while adjustable, leave alot of space. If everything you put on a shelf is 8 inches tall the shelves are 12 inches apart, that's alot of wasted space. I haven't done anything about it here except get a few of those wire racks that allow you to double stack a shelf so there are lots of places I could fit more stores if need be.

Oh - the other cabinet that surprised me as far as space goes was a corner cubboard - they just built the cabinet diagonal in a corner and it has lots of space.

I have a tee-tiny kitchen, too - it was small enough, but then they closed off the chimney for the basement oil furnace and put an add-on onto the other side of the room. It was so small that they had to build a 'box' onto the back porch just so they could 'build-in" the refrigerator! The cabinets they used were pretty and efficient, but there is very little storage space. We have huge pull-out drawers where our pan lids live, and a nice slide-out shelf cabinet where the bowls live on one shelf, and the griddle lives on the other.

I have always wanted a basement, and this house has a full one. The previous owner had converted one room of it into a bedroom for her son; rather than build in a closet, she used the hallway between it and another room as a closet. Shelves on one side, and hanging rods on the other. We use the shelves for all of our food storage, and in the hanging rod area we put large trash cans for our 50-pound sacks of grain, sugar, etc. There was a small white-painted antique highboy in the room too; it holds all of our stored cleaning products. There are accordion doors at both ends of the "hall" so that casual guests cannot see what is in there. There is a small outlet on the side of the wall in the 'hall' and we have rope lights strung around the ceiling and plugged in there, to light it up so we can read the labels.

beprepared.com sells rotational shelving racks for their #10 cans; you can put a lot of them into a very small space, and you fill from the back, take from the front so nothing gets lost. I may be going there and ordering that in a little while; organization fascinates me because I am NOT good at it! :D

Those food rotation system shelving units are great. I recently splurged and bought one from shelf reliance (on sale at Costco). I like that it's very adjustable to accommodate any size cans from small tuna fish and soup cans all the way to #10 cans.

We can now fit lots more in our small basement pantry.

Here is our mini remodel of this house:

Had to replace the Olive green stove. ;-)

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/deberosa/DEBEROSA/013-2.jpg

replaced the rusted metal sink cabinet, then new counter tops. Brought the cast iron sink from WA - got it at a yard sale! Faucet came off the net.

THe mobile island came from craigs list - drawers and cabinets open from both sides.

Deberosa,
Those colors are pretty Sure wakes up the kitchen, I like it!
Never heard of a cast iron sink, that's neat! We have stainless steel and it seems to still be ok, came in the house when it was new in '95 so it's still doing it's purpose.
I wanted to come in here after my parents gave us the house and remodel until I found this site and found myself and realized that stuff is not what is important in my world right now. I'm thankful for this site and learning who I want to be and working hard on it.
I totally understand changing out the green stove, I would have to as well! There is too much green in this house, green carpet, green furniture, green tile in kitchen on wall and floor. Ugh! It's gotta go! (someday) LOL ;)
Glad to see you guys are getting settled in :

Thank you! I can't take credit for the colors - although I love them. I have a new friend here in VA who is an artist. We traded - Kurt helped Power wash her house and she designed and helped redo the kitchen. It was ugly slate blue - icky wall paper, gray and blue floor and green stove. ;-) the cabinets were all stained dark and the trim was all a very dark brown. ICK!!! She picked the colors and did the texture on the walls. Helped me pick out the counter top. I love it and accomplished it all for well under $1000 including the new plumbing and stove!

The counters are the cheapest formica. Cut to order, I just gave them the measurements. They don't guarantee it when you do that but it worked fine. I think I paid right around $100 for that countertop. It was a difficult fit too because in the corner is the old chimney that runs through the center of the house!

Thanks for the pictures and all the ideas guys and gals. They all look great. It's giving me hope again that I can really do a lot with just a little space. Now I'm getting all excited to get it done!! I don't need nuthin fancy, and if I can do it for "well under $1000," that would be awesome. I like the white cabinets too. You guys are great!!

Here are some updated pictures of the outside of the house, and the snow. I did manage to get it painted over the summer with a little help from my brother, so at least something got done. We added the white trim around it. I think it looks a lot better compared to the picture at the beginning of this thread. I gotta get started on the inside now!!

Uncle Jim - That is gorgous! I love how you have the curved face to the drawers and then the natural log egde to the counter top. Awesome work!

Rocket man, a few cost saving ideas for your kitchen...

Check and see if you have any Habitat for Humanity Restores near you. A lot of times you you can find great deals on fixtures and supplies and some times cabinets.

Another thing is to check with home stores - local and big box. See if you can find out when they'll be replacing their display kitchens. Sometimes you can get the displays for next to nothing. Even check local cabinet shops as sometimes they'll have rejects or cancelled orders that they are willing to really deal on.

Like someone else mentioned check out those mini house designs as they have some great ways to multipurpose spaces and cool ways to tuck away items.

On those rotational shelves they're cool but pricey. I think I'm going to try building my own out of 2x4's & ply wood. I'll angle the shelf so cans roll forward and a small strip or full divider between rows. Plus I'll ba able to make it so I can slide and adjust for what ever height of can.

How small is small we have a 14X28 cabin and theres 4 of us in here we have a full kitchen and bath

Can I ask about dimensions? We have been looking at those Amish built cabins about that size. They have a loft (full or partial) with ladder. We just couldn't figure out how to put in a kitchen/bath. We talked about putting in a dividing wall that left about ten feet behind it for a BR/bath while having a Kit/dining/living in the remaining open space. That would mean we would have to fit it into 18x14 or so while using the remaining 10x14 would have to be a sm bath and BR. The loft could house a mattress, but probably wouldn't be usable as a BR for us due to height constraints and our lack of physical prowess. Do you have both a front/back door in your cabin? How do you heat? And do you have full size fridge/stove? What about counter space?

You can buy one of those pre-made cabins from the Amish at a reasonable price if you are willing to add everything yourself. Of course you have to have a second one for pantry/storage too.

Hello all, I love all of thes ideas. We just bought 40 acres and we are going to build our house. Since I am chemically sensitive we are going to go all wood throughout the house. We will have to buy the non-toxic paints and stains. So anyway the thought we had was to hit up the great antique shops around here and do the kitchen in antique hoosiers and work tables and other misc cupboards. I think it will be fun. We have an old wood/gas cookstove that will be our kitchen stove. I think the whole thing will be pretty neat once we get it done.

RocketMan you might want to be cautious about the amount of weight you put on shelves in a WallyWorld cabinet as I don't think they're designed to hold a lot of weight. We have a 5 drawer chest that has the bottom coming out of all the drawers and it just holds kids clothes. Lately though I've seen a chrome plated shelving unit like is used in many reataraunt or hotel kitchen for sale there. If it's for can goods I'd make sure it can hold up to 500#'s per shelf.
I too have a problem as I live in a mobile home and there are almost no cabinets in the kitchen. I'm storing some food stuffs in boxes and other in washed out empty plastic kitty litter buckets.
