Over the weekend i noticed that the state painted an "R" on a walnut about 1-1/2 miles from here... I know the farmer who ownes the land there, so sunday i stopped in and asked him (Joe) if he minded if i "beat the state to the walnut" up the road. He said "have at it"...

Anyway, by the time i got there monday morning, the state was just getting there too!!

I told them that "Joe" had gave it to me, and they said they'd saw it down, and chip the top, leaving the rest for me...

So they knotched it, back cut it, and pushed it over with there excavator...

I was pretty disapointed that they sawed it off so high up on the stump, but they didn't want me doing the cutting... Anyway, they piled all the wood up in "Joe's" field, while i took a load home with my pallet forks ...

None of the tree is "great" but it was FREE, and i'm sure i'll get some "decent" lumber for my wood working projects, out of it... Here's the rest of the tree...

As i got back for the second load, i saw that they had the walnut stump dug out, and had it in the back of there dump truck. I stopped at the truck, and told the driver he could dump the stump at my house if he wanted... He said "sure" and off he went. I was happy about that, as now all the lumber they left in the stump , i can saw out later... Here it is...

Once i got back home, i picked the stump up and moved it out of the way... When it warms up, i'll power wash all of the dirt off it, and see if i can find a couple nice gun stock blanks in it!!

I also noticed that there "dump truck" was full of chips from a maple they took down before the walnut, so i told the driver if he didn't mind, he could dump that load at my house too... He took it right over!

I already spread the chips under some cedar tree's i have, so i won't have to mow the grass there for a long time...

NOW, if i can just get Penny to come over and carve that stump into a bear!!! :D

LOL, i bet you could carve it into a bear, DM. But as you mentioned, there should be some fine gunstocks in that walnut.

Good job on gettin the free wood and the chips...and for getting the state workers to give a little back on those tax dollars!

I had to laugh when I saw that picture of all the equipment the state had for that little ol tree. Do you know how to tell a state shovel from others at a yard sale. The state shovel looks new. ;D ;D

The mention of yard sales, makes me think of something. DM, you probably already do this, but be sure to check for nails in that log. It being beside a road prople could have tacked signs to it.

Also, how do you check for nails? I just look for sparks :-[

Penny,

Your close to being right on that look for "sparks", as no matter how much you check a log over, sooner or later you will hit something anyway. :'(

After a visual, the best way i've found to deal with logs like this one, is to put an "old" band on, and hope for the best... lol

Once i get the slabs off, i can change out to a good band and finish sawing... Band changing only takes about 5 mins. or less...

DM, have you got the walnut cut up yet? I was wondering if you got some nice boards out of it. I bet there'll be some burl wood in that stump, down around the root area.

Very nice! What woodworker could say no to that much free walnut?

Nope... I've been under the weather for more than a week now... All of my "get up and go, got up and left"!! Good thing it doesn't hurt to let walnut sit for a while before you mill it!

Anyway, i've been given some red pine logs, that i have to go skid out and bring home SOON, so that's the next project...

Glad you're feeling better. There's been a nasty sinus and lung thing going around here, and it lasts about a week. Leaves you feeling like you been over niagara falls in a barrel. well....not dizzy and drowned, just sore and weak.

Red pine logs will be nice, too. Keep us posted.

Except the end of the handle is worn down from being leaned on.

Actually, i didn't think they had too much equipment there...

They had one dump truck with the chipper on it, and was blowing the chips into the back of it... One dump truck to haul away the stumps and wood no one wanted... A pu on each end for safety, (one with a flashing sign, and the other with a rotateing beacon and flag man) and an excavator to dig the stumps and deal with the heavy logs... (it had a thumb)
