Hubby had to clear some trees so i had him save me a big popular log. Been working on it off and on the past 3 days, too rainy out for much else. After the chainsawing, i used an Arbortech 4 1/2 inch cutting tool that takes wood off like nobody's business. I'm going to mix up some used oil and diesel to paint and preserve it. Thanks for looking.

Wow, that's neat Penny. Well, he is waving and has a smile on his face. Can't quite make out the signature on the base.

Bet it would be standing in front of it. Could you maybe take a small brush and paint down in the grooves of the letters ? You obviously have a steady hand, you still have both of them, right ;D I would have at least cut off one leg, and possibly an arm, or two :D :D :D

LOL, yeah all my bodily parts are still intact! I wear a gloves, helmet with hearing and face shield, and a pair of chainsaw pants with wire mesh padding. But those thick pants have to go in the summer because they're hot. Summer is too hot to chainsaw anyway.

Ok, good idea. I'll do that with the white paint and a little brush. That should work.

Paul.... Hummm, a deer. Have to think about that, would be a hard fit.

That looks GREAT!
How long have you been doing chainsaw carving?
I never developed an artistic side.

Penny, great job! There are a few people arround here that get paid big bucks to do these for peoples front yards. One person even had a totem pole about 12 feet high cut from a tree in his front yard. He said he wanted to slow people down driving by because it was a high accident curve.
The best I can do with a chain saw is get the lengths right (most of the time) for the fire place.

i don't know why you guys are getting all excited - all you have to do is cut away the wood that isn't bear -

Thanks to all for the nice comments and the interest. *Oh, Spike, you don't have to be too artistic to chainsaw carve. *I learned to do bears from a little article in Popular Woodworking. *They showed how to do one, step by step, it's pretty simple really. *I couldn't do too many, my shoulder problems might come back. *Anyway, here is the finished picture with the letters carved deeper and whitened in. *Thanks for the idea on that Rick...

Also, drove some posts along the stump around the back and put lag screws in to sturdy it.

Penny that's not so hard to do , now something real challenging to do is take a bear and carve it to look like a log ;D :o

Penny - he turned out gorgeous!! Nice work!

Now, as far as "just following instructions" - you could probably print up instructions as to how to do any master work, but that doesn't mean that just anyone could follow them and DO it! Credit is due - so accept it!

I agree with CarolAnn.
But I would like to give it a try. I will need a small chainsaw.

CarolAnn, Spike, Snake, John and Paul, thanks, I really appreciate the kind and generous remarks. And Flatwater, youre funny, i got a laugh out of that. :) And Moose top, LOL, your neighbor must look just like mine.

The oil has soaked in, gotta get down there and give it some more of that high dollar finish, we have plenty.

Mofree, Woodsman thank for the kind words .

;D ;D ;D Flatwater, i enjoy your humor!

The encouraging comments just shows there's a great interest in any kind of woodworking. more people are intrigued by working with their hands and wood is a warm, natural, and innviting medium. Whether it is building something useful from old pallets or making something from an old stump, wood offers endless possibilities. I hope more people will give it a try and post some pictures of their work, whatever it is, i love to see all kinds of wood crafts and projects.

When I was living on the coast I used to go to a place on the pennisula called point no point. It was a haven for drift wood. That's the only thing I miss about the coast

Good Morning Penny,

Thank you for going to the trouble to send me a copy of the article. And I see you work pretty fast when you are on a mission too.
This does not mean I will be carving a bear anytime soon, just would like to read about the techniques.

Thanks Penny,

I received the article saturday.
Your bear looks much better than the one in the article. I see the raised arm on the bear was something you added to make it more challenging.

OK Penny , now ya did it , I went out and got a little 170 16 inch bar Stiehl chain saw to give it a try. I cut down a pine last year that it takes two people to hug the damn thing < not That I'm a tree hugger ya understand> but it's a way of measurement. When I get it skinned and cut I'll show you the results. I'm thinken a naked indian girl that looks like a bear. :o ;D ::) I tried to get my wife to pose but she just hit me along side the head. I took that as a no

Thank you Rick!

Flatwater, your wife answered you in bear language, she cuffed you one!

Glad you got you a 170, that's what i use. But with that big of a log, you may have to go from both sides to make some of the cuts. Would you like the magazine article i sent Spike? If shows some step-by-step procedures that make it easy to get the head right. If so, pm me your address, i'll drop in the mail to you.
