I do a little home tanning and I'm wondering what people used to degrease beaver, coon hides etc. in the old days, before we had the products that are available today. I like to keep things as natural as possible and I't just doesn't seem right to use kerosene, acetone etc. on a hide that I'm going to brain tan. Anybody?

Hello,

We are going to begin the process of learning to tan with my youngest son;s first deer. I'm not an expert (heck, I haven't even done it yet), but I've been doing a lot of reading.

I seem to remember that Dawn dish soap can be used at a ratio of ½ fluid ounce per gallon of water for raccoon pelts.

I hope this helps.

Dawn or liquid Tide. One set of tanning instructions say to use unleaded gasoline. I did that once, and couldn't get the smell out.

Thank you both. I wasn't ignoring you, I lost track of this thread and just came across it again. Boy, I'm going down hill. Thanks again.
