View Full Version : tanning rabbit hides

I am wanting to start tanning some of our rabbit hides and am looking for advice. has anyone done this and if so what worked best?

Depends on what you're going to do with them. I believe you could "preserve" the hides by soaking in some rubbing alcohol for a few days. If you're more serious, get you a Van Dykes taxidermy catalog. They have a lot of easy tanning solutions. I got some Krowtan i'm going to try soon.

Penny, have you took the lid off that krowtan and took a good strong whiff? :o

I tried tanning an otter with it and didn't have very good results. I think it may be better for taxidermy where the hide doesn't need to be soft.

MM I would just use a basic alum tan. From my experience with rabbit though, it doesn't matter what kind of tan you use. With rabbits they are going to start sheding in a few years.

Chickenfried. I have to admit you were right about the Krowtan. At first i thought you were wrong, but now i see my beaver hide hard, stiff and useless, so i'm going to have to put a lot of work into it to try to fix it.
