I'm assuing that the bell is intended to warn the bear you are coming, to avoid unannounced confrontations. And then the knife is for weapons use. But then, why not chooose a straighter shaft than the one you did?

The picture doesn't do the stick justice, I assume you maybe thought a straighter shaft would have been better for throwing and you would be right , but I never did believe in throwing a perfectly good weapon away. This stick was made to thrust and is based on the police pr24. What you can't see in the elk/deer handle is a hardened steel 3/8 inch bolt that runs through the horn and through the wooden shaft. The nut is counter sunk then filled with appoxy and horn shavings to hide that end and the small deer horn inserted on the handle hides the other end of the bold. The knife blade is 6inches long and 21/2 inches wide, razor sharp on both edges. If it was thrown one would be taking a big chance that it would do any damage but thrusted several times it would make some serious wounds. And your right , the bell is so I won't have to use the blade.

Having worked law enforcement for the last 25 years I know what I can do with a 36" baton. Adding a 6" sticker would really make it dangerous. I might just have to make myself one of those.

WARNING

Due to the frequency of human-bear encounters, the BC Fish & Wildlife Branch is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen, and any persons who use the out of doors in a recreational or work related function to take extra precautions while in the field.

We advise the outdoorsman to wear little noisy bells on clothing so as to give advance warning to any bears that might be close by so you don’t take them by surprise.

We also advise anyone using the out of doors to carry “Pepper Spray” with them, in case of an encounter with a bear.

Outdoorsmen should be on the watch for fresh bear activity, and be able to tell the difference between black bear feces, and grizzly bear feces. Black bear feces is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear feces has bells in it and smells like pepper.
