I broke down and ordered me a Beginners Carving Kit from www.littleshavers.com

I had read several responses to questions on a carving woodsite that advised buying this sites tools.

Evidently the owner personally sharpens the tools for the type wood you plan to be doing before he sends them out (and will re-sharpen them as needed) ... I told them I was planning to carve driftwood and cypress knees.

I also found and ordered a book off e-bay ..."How To Carve Faces In Driftwood"

These are my Christmas presents from my wife.

I hope to figure out how to get faces and stuff to "emerge" from all the odd pieces of wood I find rambling around the woods and the riverbottom.

It came in and since I don't have any spare time at the moment I gave it to my wife (unopened) and told her to wrap it up for my Christmas present.

I did have about an hour yesterday to walk the levee at a local lake and pick up two large armfuls of driftwood.

I only need to find the artistic input and get started...after New Years.

Sounds like an intriguing hobby. Good luck with it. Maybe post some of your creations when you're satisfied with them. Nice avatar, by the way!

Do a 'search' for Junior Cobb if you wan't to see some fine carving. I have a few pieces of his from the 1970s.

Oldnway - thanks for posting that site. It's great!
From that one, there was also a link to this one:

-A very good site selling nothing, but with very good pictures of more kinds of wood than I ever knew there were; an excellent resource.
