Here is a picture of a coon skin that will be made into a hat for my great nephew. I tanned it at home using a chrome based tan. It turned out soft, but only after a LOT of work breaking and shaving the skin. Next one i'll try a product called Krowtan which is advertised to produce a softer tan and you can skip the salting process.

I've heard good things about the Krowtan. Supposed to be easy and clean. I often read the taxidermy.net forums, you can find alot of information there, if need be.

Penny Plinker, that's a handy skill. Hard to learn? Why is the skin blue?

My best guess is copper sufate is in in the chrome tan.. causing a blue color.

Coons are tuff as they grease burn easy and there is tons of grease... I used that to make sea shell lamps with a pinch of moss as the wick.
