View Full Version : Dough Rising Bucket
I wanted one but couldn't find one locally and didn't want to pay shipping etc. So I made one. And I am sure many of you would think of the same idea.
Clear plastic rubbermade container - square
no measurements on it so I made my own
one quart of water - mark all 4 corners with a permanent marker; add another quart of water; mark the corners, etc. worked like a charm.

WAY TO GOOOOOOOO! :D Plastic ice cream containers work well also. Just one point. It's not necessarily the quart marks, it's about where the dough line is when you pat it into the container. So measure that with a ruler. Double that measure for where the dough needs to rise to when it's "doubled", and mark that with a post-it-note or a piece of masking tape. Not all recipes will come up to the 1-quart mark.

I found an easier way to 'make' my own dough rising bucket.
I use a large 8-cup Pyrex measuring cup. The lines are already there, and I spray the inside with veg. spray and put in the dough, taking careful note of the measuring line at the top of the dough. It would never have occurred to me to do this if Karen had not posted about the dough rising bucket that she uses. That started me thinking.
So, she really deserves the credit for getting my thinking going down the road that led to this idea.
This method is especially good if you aren't wanting a 'total' doubling of the dough, which I don't when using all whole wheat flour. Hope this suggestion proves helpful to someone. * * :)
I have never seen a measuring cup that big. I WANT ONE

I don't even remember where I bought mine, since it was several years ago. I would think that a kitchen specialty shop would have one. Or you might check the Pyrex web site online to see if they still make them this size. I hope you are able to locate one, since they really do fulfill the dough rising bucket idea.

Hi, I just registered here so I could answer about the 8 qt measuring cup. Pampered Chef sells them and they come with a lid. I use mine all the time for canning pickles, jams, etc.
I got kind of excited reading about making the ww bread and would like to make some but I am the only one that eats it and I wouldn't eat a loaf in two weeks. DD and DN will eat bought ww bread but not any that I have made, so far.
I not only love BWH but KA flour catalog too.

Mitzy - did you mean 8 CUP? 8 Qt would be HUGE! ;D
I got my 2 qt. (8 cup) at Goodwill, but I was lucky to find it (and snag it before my sister!) I've seen them at Wal-Mart & Shopko for about $15, and Amazon.com has them for $8.45 + shipping.

LOL, I did mean cup. I was having trouble typing that and got carried away, I guess.

Your dough rising bucket is an awesome idea, Mom.
Yet another great BHM idea I will put into service!
The bucket I bought is square but the bottom is slightly smaller than the top - graduated so I didn't just want to measure with a ruler and mark. If you wanted smaller measurements you could use a cup of water instead of the quart like I used. And permanent marker does wear off after a few washings but it's so easy to put it on again.

I got mine at surfasonline.com. They are the same ones that are sold on the King Arthur site only WAY cheaper.

Lehman's also has the 2 Qt. glass measuring cup with a lid for $14.95 and/or a 3 1/2 Melamine Batter Bowl for $15.95 + S&H.
