I don't know if this is the place to put it, but....a friend has a "trailer" for sale - $300 a month payments. I'm currently paying $600 a month leasing a house. My father-in-law has 18 acres of land and I wanted to buy the trailer (which is already on lthe land and then try and build a house in front of the trailer. Does that sound reasonable to anyone? My wife hates the idea of living in a trailer. I like saving $300 a month!!!! ;D

It's been done many times and your situation has happened many times. I think the deciding factor is to build on to the trailer with a topnotch job so one can't even tell the trailer was there

Before you do ANYTHING go to the planning and development office { zoning } in the county you wish to do this, and ASK.

In this county trailers cannot be placed on a lot/parcel zoned for a home unless it is also zoned for the trailer. which is rare !
of course this county does not allow camping either !

two questions....

will you need to put in a septic system, well, and power lines for the trailer?

insurance rates?

I have seen some done well and some done poorly. I use it as a temp living solution as I build my house. What you think you are saving could be used up in higher utility bills for heating and cooling.

I'm not sure I made myself clear on the initial post. I'm wanting to live in the trailer, which is already on my father-in-laws land and build a house in front of the trailer, not on the trailer.

So, bones, you think my utility bills will be higher in the trailer than in the house?

Thanks for the responses.
