I wanted to start gathering material to start building on my cabin. *I cannot afford to buy ALL of the building material at once. *I wanted to go ahead and start on the flooring and four corner posts and possible wall studs but for the rest of the material such as exterior siding and roof that will have to wait for another 2weeks till payday. *

My question: *Will the sun/elements be hard on the material if left exposed but installed for a period of say two weeks? *The sun is bright and hot in these parts and we never know when its gonna rain. *

With the long Labor Day weekend coming up, I would like to be productive and get started on this project. *I figure it will take me a month to a month and a half to complete this project. *I have to take into consideration the time i have left after a work day, funds available, the 100+miles round trip, etc. *

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks, Jen.

Most building materails are let in the weather for much longer then you are talking about. The biggest thing is how their stored Buy yourself some cheap tarps keep your studs stacked neatly and banded to prevent warpage. We built our cabin our selves and been living it as we go. Its been up for 2 years and we are just getting to siding it know. We focused on the livability issues first. The hardest thing to protet in my opion was the sheetrock

For what it's worth go to the local lumber yard and tell them you are the general contractor for the home your building and would like to open a GC cash account. This will give you general contractor discount on everything the lumber yard sells. It would be good to be ready to put in an order when you are approved.

I've been building on my cabin for about a year now and my biggest disappointment is buying straight boards one day and a week later they are twisted , warped , and bent. Try and buy KD (kiln dried ) as apposed to SD ( sun dried ) the KD , if you can find it cost a little more but will stay pretty straight.
