We are in the process of buying a piece of raw land. The entire place is wooded. There are about 33 ac of hard wood and 3ac of pine best guess. I think the home site is going to be where the pines are. I have a feeling that's the one spot that will perk. I have right many tools and a tractor with a front end loader & Back hoe for it & some other attachments. Also a good 20" Echo chain saw. I am planning to build the house and other buildings off the land for the most part. There are plenty of stones to use for the foundation and lots of hard woods & some pine for a log home.
I would like to get opinions on The Top Ten have to have tools I need to start my home with. Come on everybody give me your list.

For my money and speed of construction - Nail guns and a good sized compressor, no doubt about it. Wish I had jumped a long time ago. I couldent believe the ease of putting togetherr a stick built 16 x 8 storage shed. What a bood to the construction of stick built.

I think it really matters what type of construction you are doing. Personnally I'd use the logs for post and beam construction on the south side and either rock, rammed earth or hay bales on the north and sides, with as much earth sheltering as possibe. Good winter passive solar, cool summer earthen thermal mass. However, a whole different type of construction and tools. I wish I had your tractor! For traditional stick construction, I like a good worm drive circular saw, a chopsaw and then build a table for both sides that you can set a stop on for repeatitive cuts, if sheet rocking a good screw gun with a depth stop. Air tools are great and speed up the work and keeps you from having bigger muscles on your hammer arm. Good drill with some guts to drive that huge hole saw you didn't think that you would ever need. A sawzall in nice to have. That and I am always amazed at that can be laid out with a framing square and a 4' level. I have been tempted to get a cheap laser 360 level at Harbor freight for checking level when excavating and foundation work, (can't justify a good one and skeptical of harbor freight), can't remember how many time I used a come along when building. a 12 pack of ice cold beer, an understanding spouse, kids that can help,(my son built most of our deck), and another 12 pack.

#4 Good portable table saw
#5 33 gallon or more compressor
#6 Framing Nail gun
#7 Finish Nail gun
#8 Reciprocating Saw

My wife and I built our own homestead ourselves from raw forest land. I'd say the top ten tools used ( in no particular order ) were something like -
1) A good shovel
2) A good pulaski
3) A sthil chainsaw
4) A cheap Sears circular saw
5) A mikita 3/8 drill
6) A small Sears 1,500 watt generator to power the above two tools
7) A good heavy framing hammer. Mine has a fiberglass handle and I got it for six bucks back in '97 and I'm still swinging it.
8) A tape measure. I like to buy a bunch of cheap tapes and keep 'em handy. I go throuhght them pretty fast. At least one should be a 25' footer.
Ummm, that's was about it!
Knowing what I've learned about building in the last few years I'd have to add -
9) A three foot aluminum level.
10) A chalk line.
11) A cheap cement electric mixer. I got one for about two hundred bucks and my little genny runs it just fine.
Man, when I think of all the work this thing would have save me years ago.... :P
As you can see, it really don't take much to build stuff with. I'd certainly not go out and blow a ton of cash on "Gotta Have" power tools.
