Hello everyone. Yesterday we had the hardest rain storm I have seen and the roof sprang a leak around where the stove pipe goes through the ceiling. When I got home from work I started tearing out the ruined sheetrock. I nudged the stove pipe and it came down! the top had rusted out. I guess its kind of a blessing that it happend this way so we didnt use it again this winter that way. Anyway I finally found a hardware store that had the pipe(most dont have it this time a year around here.) Ive never put together the pipe before and Im having a heck of a time trying to get the pipe to snap together. Its the kind that has a seam all the way down the pipe and your supposed to stick it together kind of like tounge in groove wood(I think). but mine keeps coming out oval shaped and then I cant get the segments to plug together. Is there a trick to this or do I need to take some pliers and bend the ends? Thanks a ton for any suggestions.

Is at least one end of your section crimped? *The tongue and groove type slot should snap together and they can be a bear. *As far as fitting the ends together, we had a tool that made the crimps which made the circumference smaller so it slipped into the next piece. *I'm sure this could be accomplised with some vice grips if need be.

Not to belittle you but it is stove pipe and not ventilation pipe right? *Stove pipe should be blackened or stainless. *Ventilation pipe is typically galvanized.

Here is a link to the tool we used to join two sections of straight pipe.

Snap together pipe can be a real pain in the rump.
If they don't snap together easily because the seams a screwed up, take it back.
Once you have snapped it together it's never perfectly round...you need to press down on the pipe along it's length to make it as round as possible...usually on the seam side.

Once you've got it rounded, the sections should slide together without much trouble.

Are you sure you want to use that snap together pipe through your roof?? I won't use it for the exact reason your replaceing yours.... I already lost one house to a fire, and i'm not wanting another loss like that!

I only use stainless pipe now, even thought it's expensive, it looks to be the last time i will have to buy that pipe, as it will outlast me! I don't have to worry about it either...

The pipe I bought is painted black with some kind of coating that is supposed to be for wood stove vents. Also in from the ceiling up past the roof is a false chimney, so the pipe is surrounded with bricks and concrete. I think the rusting came from the rain on top of the chimney. I talked to the person I bought the house from and they said the pipe had been installed about 25 years ago and never cleaned! Im going to check the slots this morning and make sure they are not smashed together. Maybe thats whats keeping it from going together.

Thanks everyone for the quick response! I just posted this before bed last night and this morning I have all kinds of good info!
