I have a wood stove in a corner which I would like to build a river rock back drop for (river rock floor to roof and extending about 4 feet in each direction from the corner).
I have been looking all over the internet for ideas on this but so far I'm striking out. Not sure if I am just not calling it by the right name or what, but I wondered if anyone knows how to do this or if they have seen instructions/suggestions anywhere on the internet for this type of thing.
Sure would apprecaite any tips.
Thanks,
Brad

Hi Bkuhn,
Dick Proenneke built one as You are describing in Alaska and it is recorded in "Alone In The Wilderness" if You can get a hold of that DVD/Video or PBS tapes of that series.

Something like what You are after:

Just be sure to use wall/anchor ties as You would with brick or block:

You could always modify the River rock shower (http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/ainsworth77a.html) that Dorothy Ainsworth described in Issue 77.

That much weight would require a pretty substantial footing I would think.

A word of caution on using river rock around a fire... I was in the cadets and some guys used river rock to make a fire ring and one of the rocks blew up. The moisture in the rock or something. just .02 cents worth.
