View Full Version : How to attach an antenna to a tall tree?

My property is covered with trees (most about 80 feet) and so radio reception is pretty poor. I have a scanner/weather radio which I'd like to add an external antenna to and it occurred to me that even a small antenna attached to the tops of one of these trees would probably do very well.

However I'm stumped with how to mount the antenna up there and wondered if anyone has any suggestions short of just climbing the thing? That may be the only option (in which case I'll look for another option) but I figured it was worth asking the stupid question. Seems like over the years I've read an awful lot of creative ideas for accomplishing things in Backwoods Home Magazine and this forum that I have never thought of so I figured I'd ask. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks!
Brad

A trick I've seen hams use is to get a slingshot - one of those wrist-rocket affairs. You shoot a fishing sinker with line over a branch, then use it to pull a wire end up. Works for simple dipole antennas - if you are thinking of mounting a whip type antenna, then you do need to consider other alternatives.

Pat

i love my scanners and often read a website called www.radioreference.com

if you look at the left side of their page, there is a link that says something like "Wiki Reference" which is an online encyclopedia chock full with all kinds of info about scanning.

sorry i don't have a direct answer, but i've never come across anyone who can't get by with a decent aerial on the roof.

Here's one source for the slingshot method..
"EZ Hang" (http://www.ezhang.com/)
