Right now, I store my flour in a plastic bucket with a mylar liner. Since I am going to invest in a grain mill and wheat, I want to know the best way to store it for long term.
Can I just store the wheat the same in mylar bags in buckets or do I have to use oxygen absorber packs? I use plain lids now, but I was thinking of getting the Gamma Seal lids since they are supposed to give an airtight seal. If I use those would it still be necessary to use the oxygen absorber and where do you purchase it? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey Emerald,
Do you make alot of flour? Do you plan on using it frequently for baking? Depending on the amount of grain and the frequency of opening the container, I`d keep the bulk grains in the original grain sacks until it`s needed. It will be quite safe in them. Just keep them off any surfaces that can get wet. Personally, when I open a grain sack, I use either large deli jars, or, gallon wine jugs to store the most frequently used items, especially the wheat and oats. I keep a gallon size glass wine jug with some oats next to the grinder. I only use a half a cup at a time for oatmeal. I can pour out a measured amount easily from it. Beans, millet and corn gets stored in spackle pails. They get used least. I grind shelled corn about 2-3 Lbs. at a time and freeze it in big plastic bags til needed.

You can put use diatomaceous earth for grain storage, it helps keep insect invasion to a minimum.

This is true and it works well but it is very abrasive and hard on the grinder.
