Does anyone know the proper angles to sharpen a chain. All info would be helpful. Thanks. Terry

You can buy a file holding jig at the hardware store (bought mine at Home Depot) that has the correct angle stamped into the metal of the jig. You just line up the marks on the jig, with the direction of the bar and you've got the correct angle. Make sure you are buying the correct diameter file for your particular chain.

Also, remember besides sharpening the individual teeth of the chain, you also need to plane down the rakers. Again, the jig will have a slot in it so you can quickly determine the correct height of the rakers. I sharpen my chain each and every time a use my saw.

Thanks. I will do that. I made a mistake. I loaned it out. He hit something like a anvil lol. He tried to sharpen it and the rest is history. Wont happen again. Terry

If it is really bad you may be better off just removing the chain and taking it in to be sharpened.
Doesn't cost that much.

I prefer 25* and hold the file level... Keep in mind that you HAVE to keep the teeth the same length on both sides of the chain. If you don't, the bar will want to make a curved cut.

I have a chain grinder, and most of the time i prefer to use that when i sharpen...

I have a little hoodjie-do that uses a dremmel to sharpen the chains. Works well enough, though I use the file jig with the dremmel to get the rakers down. Makes the job pretty quick.
