There's another thread in this section about whitewash.

I had a question about other homemade paints and found this link which has 20 recipes for various types of paint.

http://www.ibiblio.org/ecolandtech/rural-skills/homemade/homemade-paint

Googling "homemade paint" turns up quite a bit of info.

FWIW...

Hi Chris
If you're interested for recipes for things like paint, you've got to get a copy of Henley's formulas for home and workshop.

http://www.amazon.com/Formulas-Workshop-Containing-Scientific-Money-Saving/dp/B000NXITLG/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1211895404&sr=1-12

I have two copies, one which is the most recent 1979 edition, and the older 1947 edition.

It is full of recipes for all sorts of household items and give instructions on how to formulate things like paint, matches, medicines, cleaners, Portland cement and even instructions on things like how to make alloys, or anneal steel. Definately a "must have" for any homesteader.

Michael,

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like a great book.

The more I research this sort of thing, the more I'm amazed at how many retail manufacturers are just bottling up well-known forumulas with a different coloring, perfumes, and packaging.

I could kick myself thinking back over the years how much I've spent on things like Windex etc that I could have made myself for pennies on the dollar.

Even if it weren't cheaper, its worth it to know what you're applying onto your home and you get to control the strength.

Thanks again,

Chris

Our soil here is rich in clay, making it easy to create milk paints that weather better then the high end stuff from the box stores....as of yet, I've not had to add a second coat to the outside poles of our barn. Cost to make 5 gallons was around 4 bucks 3 years ago. Could be a little higher now since evaporated milk has gone up in price.....

A Demo version of Henleys is available at the Librum, http://www.librum.us.

Milk paints are covered in other Librum areas, but there was realmilkpaint.com

Hope it helps.
