I was just thinking the other day about uses for old carpet, and one popped into my head.

Cut a suitable size piece for use as a skirt around your trees. It helps keep the weeds down, and it sure beats those $12 tree skirts made of plastic.

Even multiple pieces can be overlapped around the tree to get the same effect. Weeds are reduced and moisture in the soil is retained.

My favorite use is as a mat to lay on when I work on equipment in the barn or garage, but pieces too small for that are good for around young trees.

I like to use carpet scraps for wrapping outdoor pipes in the winter to protect against freeze damage.

The mulching idea is great too. Wish I had enough to do that.

my back door neighbour uses them as pond liners... but only the jute backed ones not the synthetic backed ones.

I have used it with good results around my fruit trees...Also we have used large pieces instead of landscape cloth to keep the weeds down. Just cover with shredded bark and who knows it's that ugly pea green carpet from the basement. ;D
