How to make Whitewash

Do any of you ever use or make old fashioned "whitewash", like paint to use on outbuildings? I know it has slaked lime, salt and water, but cant remember the right portions of each. I cant seem to find my reference book that had the instructions in it. I have some new outbuildings that need to be coated. My dad always said if you keep buildings painted a light color it would help keep varmints away. I paited a chicken house 15 yrs ago and it still has a lot left on it but needs a new coat to look nice.

Whitewash is cheap to make and last a long time. And it wont hurt the animals or birds.

Thanks tufhelp, I did find the recipe like I had used before, the other ingredient was the alum, and it does make the whitewash stick better.
Just thought some old timer on here might know the answer off top their head.

Missed this thread earlier...

Can/should whitewash be sprayed with something like a Wagner powerpainter or other external sprayer? I imagine you'd have to sift the dry incredients and strain well before spraying.


Also, one of the sites mentioned that its for interior use only as it washes off in the weather. Are there any recipes for an exterior coating that can be homestead-made with common ingredients for using on outbuildings, fences, etc?
