cut a hole in the side of the house & then you still have a window to look out of. & yeah you can stick a piece of plywood in place of the window np. we just put our air conditioner in today. it was kinda hot but we have to climate control the room with the grand piano so it doesnt get too humid.
Hmm... I waited to post here because I wanted to verify my understanding with a contractor associate of mine:
He was quite clear on his choice.
Locate the unit in the best possible location and then do a permanent installation (cut a hole, brace (create header and footer) properly and insulate well.
Buy a commercial cover to place over the outside in winter (his suggestion after seeing so many poorly made home constructions).
The issue with a window conversion is accumulated damage to the window itself... the system would work fine as long as it sits in the window opening.
Eventually (according to him and I concur) vibration from normal use and taking the conditioner in and out seasonally regardless of how careful you are, will ruin the window.
He pointed out that most windows are not in the best location for an air conditioner anyway, you will notice that units mounted within the wall studs are often higher up than they would be if placed in a window. Hot air rises, cold air falls etc.
BTW: Between you and I Kurt is right!
Don't tell him because it will just go to his head I am sure.
The issue of course is that you made an investment that would be considered substancial in both financial and structural considerations. A hundred dollars is a hundred dollars... and cutting a hole in the wall of ones home is never a completely painless experience.
I don't know what your relationship is like or who has the responsibility concerning investments and such... but I can at least identify with his reaction.
My wife is a sweetheart... and because of this she often thinks of others while blindly wandering the alleyways in her life (I am just kidding of course, she is a very smart woman who thinks of others before herself... a quality that I of all people can not fault her for, being a generally nasty person who cares for few myself).
Just knowing her makes me a better person, and society as a whole should thank her for insuring that I am a bit less contrary because of her influence.
But her IQ is often geared toward different horizens than mine.
She once saw a perfectly nice looking computer for "only $100.00" and thinking of my joy at converting used systems for my own use... yes... bought it on the spot and proudly brought it home! No doubt imagining my gratitude and the hugs and kisses she would receive for a... 486 with Windows 3.1!
I tried dear reader... I really did!
I thanked her for thinking of me.
She is now limited to five dollars per "thoughtful aquisition" concerning computer hardware and software.
And she has provided me with many enjoyable games seen at garage sales etc.
Of course... well let's see, I am looking at my wall of "gifts" now.
"Police Quest" circa... Let's just say that it recommends something called a "mouse", not that it is required but it is recommended, and at least 4mb ram! She was right as she excitedly announced that I definately have 4mb of ram!
"Sentinal Worlds" which will not only work with an IBM compatable system but a Tandy 4000!
It is quite demanding however, you must have at least 256k memory and it won't work at all unless you have a "Colored Monitor".
Each time she brings me one of course she receives a much deserved kiss and hug, because she deserves it for thinking of me.
And once in a while she has produced a gem that simply floors me. I have spent hours playing "Blade Runner" by Westwood studios that she purchased for two dollars someplace. It was made in 1998 but the graphics are simply overwhelming, and the sound is just like directing the movie!
