View Full Version : Firing Shot in a rifled muzzleloader.
I just picked up a CVA .45 Caliber Kentucky styled rifle. It was built from a kit.
I'm not sure of the date or when it was made. But it is in pretty good shape and for the price of $75 I could not pass it up.
Well the barrel is rifled...can I shoot shot out of it? I know its not a trade rifle but.....?
Another late Friday night I'm board post!

Don't know much about black powder stuff........
But going to presume it would be like shooting a shot shell from a rifled shotgun barrel.
Your pattern will open up really quick and not be very good. People have said some patterns will be shaped like a donut.
Good luck

Hi Mr. B, Shooting shot out of a rifled barrel will not work. Wyobuckaroo is right and the doughnut shape is close to what happens. You might contact Green Mountain Muzzleloading and see if they sell smooth bore barrels that will drop in to the stock...

Taking out the breech plug negates the warranty and absolves the manufacturer of responsibility. This is a must when changing barrels on a muzzle loader.
Not that your solution won't work, just voids any warranties and product liabilities.
Ya well.....I think Ill just stick to the old single shot 12 gauge for shot instead of messing with a perfectly good muzzleloader...thanks anyways!

Mr B - it depends on why you want to shoot shot from a rifled bbl. Your daughter got a suitor that you don't cotton to? :o Make up some Grape Shot. You'll need to weigh the load but, basically, you take 'pinch weights' for fishing and attach them to fishing line before wadding them in cloth and loading. The fishing line will keep them as tight or as loose as you wish. Your imagination is the only limiting factor! :)

A local store here carried those CVA Kentucky rifles and the pistols too. But that was many years ago. I bought one for $95 on sale. Built a pistol that same year too. Those CVA guns could be made to shoot good. I have bought several over the years from pawn shops and junk stores that someone had just stuck together and did a real sloppy job on. I sure would like to have another unopened kit.
