Jim or Fred and I had a discussion about that particular critter probably a year or more ago......
Guess what fellers, I got one ;) Was in school doing my presentation on the Remington 788 and was gushing about them and a fellow student approached me after it was over to show me one. A 7-08 carbine. Someone painted the stock back and the bolt closed on the NO-GO gauge, but I got it for 200$ HALE YEAH! Scraped the stock after hunting with it (establsihed headspace was off but not UNsafe after measuring it carefully and testfiring) and am getting ready to correct headspace to minimum tolerances this semester. I'm so tickled! I now own all three carbines made.
Someone also was looking for a 6mm magazine for the 788, Gun Parts corp is making reproduction mags for 788 in harder to find calibers for around the 40$ mark, have seen them at the shotshow and they look great, identical to original and people tell me they function well and are caliber stamped like original.

It's a good combo, and you should have great success with it while hunting. Stay away from real heavy loads though. Lock time is very short, and you should have a very good shooter.

Yes, the stamped firing pin lent to some super swift locktime. I do not shoot heavy loads in any of my 788's due to staying away from high pressures, which will help prolong the life of the bolt as it is made with rear locking lugs.
I'm looking into some 120 gr hollow points to see how they are going to do. It shot 140 pretty good, but I want to drop back as you suggested an try some IMR 4064 or 4350 as opposed to 3031.
Will be shooting it again here in the next month or so, got to get the headspace corrected.

Walk me thru the headspace thing, please.
If the "No GO" chambers, do they not correct it by cutting the barrel end on a lathe?
Does that not then screw up the iron sights, causing the milled cuts for them to be tilted? ???

I have a buddy that has a .257 Roberts and I believe it is in a 788. I think he got it from his dad and his dad bought it new. I have a Savage in 7-08 and love it, I did a twenty rd break in on it after 10rds it started going all over the plate until I realized the main stock screw was loose. By that time I was frustrated so I gave my brothers .338 a few shots(that was a mistake!) then went back to the 7-08. I picked up a flinch from the .338 and my accuracy went south, The wife wanted to try it so I let her, She clover-leafs her first 3rds! I still love that Savage but I will have to get another cuz the wife gets mine!
